I just knocked out a finance class towards my MBA in finance and signed up for my 4th PHA Class (Structure, Process and Outcomes of Regulation) towards the MS in Pharm from UF. It starts on 1/5 and ends 2/22. I forgot how much I liked TUI's format. UF has a new format called Elluminate. Has anyone heard of it?
Yes! Yes, the Washington State Community College System has purchased a license for it and it is available to all instructors. It looks really cool. I haven't had time to look into it but it looks like the future of online instruction. The following is the blurb they sent out to us: Elluminate Live! is built specifically for live, multi-media, many-to-many collaboration. It enables virtual real-time communication, collaboration, and education for staff, faculty and students. The Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges has purchased licenses for Elluminate® Live! that can be used at no cost by college faculty and staff, plus State Board and HECB staff. The system installation is hosted by Elluminate® and managed by WashingtonOnline (WAOL) staff. With Elluminate® Live! you can offer or provide: Meetings with at-a-distance participants Virtual office hours for students Live instruction and demonstrations Tutoring and mentoring Asynchronous and synchronous collaborative content development Student project collaboration Remote guest speakers and virtual field trips Professional development Virtual help desk Virtual communities If you want to create Elluminate® Live! meetings you will need to request an Elluminate® Supervisor account. You need to complete 3 one-hour online training sessions before you can request an account. You do not need an Elluminate® account to participate in an Elluminate® Live! meeting convened by someone else.
There was an article about it in University Business back in March of this year... I've never really paid too much attention to the software, but I know of the company. If I remember correctly some of their developers worked on the project that was re-branded by Symnatec as Norton 2000. A good bunch of techies, to say the least. I'm guessing that UF is piloting their "Elluminate Live!" software... how are you liking it?
I use Elluminate extensively as an adjunct for Franklin University. It is a pretty good platform once you get it figured out. The main feature I use is the class session for presentations - the presenter can share his/her file with everyone logged on. Elluminate offers free training sessions on the software through their website.
I'm going to complete the training during our Holiday break (after I finish grading exams this weekend!). Truckie, do you know if Eastern or Western are signing up for Elluminate too?
So far the only college I teach at that uses Elluminate is Franklin. I have been using Wimba (a competing product) in my DPA at Valdosta. I think Wimba is a better product from a user's standpoint.
DSU uses Elluminate to conduct their doctoral seminar courses and their doctoral oral proposal defense. DSU's first oral proposal defense took place today at 3:00pm (CST). I went to listen in but my software needed to run Elluminate was not up to date so I missed it. I presented two doctoral research presentations using Elluminate. DSU requires doctoral students to present their research and view presentations from three other students. A question and answer session always followed each presentation.
