    Hi All,

I have been reading about the MAIS program at WNMU that I'm about to start. I see that it says that each concentration has its own exit requirements. However, I cannot find what they are. I can only find the ones for Pyschology, which is actually not one of my concentrations. I'm doing History and Political Science. I have not heard back from my advisors, so I was wondering if anyone here could explain what the exit requirements are for those two concentrations.

    Thanks,
    Matt

This won't help, but when I applied (English and Ed Tech) they told me that the exit requirements were not clear, and that I would need to meet with a member of both depts to work it out. I saw they posted the psych requirements- that's kinda new, they didn't have that a few months back- so I think they are working out the kinks as they go.

Yes, that's what I saw too. I'm wondering if a thesis would legitimize an interdisciplinary studies program... I know that doesn't sound right, but I couldn't think of how to word it. I'm just wondering if writing a thesis would even be worth it since the program is not specifically in one discipline.

I read the psych thesis requirement, and it seemed pretty intense for having only done 18 credits in the subject- I don't know... (and two of them?)

That's another question I have. Are there TWO exit requirements, one for each subject area, or just one general one for the degree?

So Matt, what did you decide to do for your exit requirements? Are you doing the same thing (thesis, capstone, or exam) for both concentrations?

I can't wait to find out either. Matt's really close to finishing I think.

I'm going with the comps. I was enrolled in 20th Century Revolutions this semester, and I had just sent in my graduation audit form so I could graduate in the spring. Then, as Murphy would have it, my wife lost her job two days ago. My advisor, Dr. Hernandez, tells me I could take 2 courses in the spring, or I could just push everything back. I'll keep you guys updated though! I'm a little nervous about the comps, and I'm kind of wishing I had opted for a thesis afterall...

Matt, I know you'll do great. And I'm real sorry to hear about your wife's job.

Thanks! The sad part is that my school division made a rather poor choice. I totally did the WNMU program so that I could teach advanced courses for them and save them tens of thousands of dollars in tuition money. Now that they've let my wife go, I have no intention of staying. So much for their savings...

    Mattbrent,

I have found your postings about WNMU informative. I am going to begin with WNMU Spring 2012. I was 80% done with my Ed.S. degree at Liberty University and was notified that because I dropped a D sub-term course before the start date (had just completed 2 courses in sub-term B which means I completed enough credits full-time doctoral level for Fall 2011 semester. However, the newly hired financial aid compliance officer (a 2011 BA degree holder from Liberty University) said I withdrew from Liberty University because I did not complete the course in the next sub-term, mind you I had already completed 2 doctoral courses. Therefore, LU has to send 1/2 of my aid back to the government. I did not withdraw from Liberty University and I dropped before the course started so I was never really in the last course. I was on the phone for two days trying to correct this and never could reach a financial aid supervisor. I am done with Liberty University after 2.5 years there I have seen some not so positive changes in the last six or so months. I am going to finish the WNMU MAIS and then go to a campus based university for my doctorate in education. I think it is interesting that you graduated from Christopher Newport University in that Naval hero and admiral Newport is my ancestor (9th great grandfather). I hear CNU is a very good public university. Thanks for the information about WNMU.

My pleasure! And good luck to you! Sorry about Liberty though...

And yes, CNU is an amazing school that is continuing to grow. (It's making my degree look more and more impressive, haha...)

I am registered to begin the MAIS this fall. I too have had a hard time communicating with the school and the advisors. I was told that I could do a thesis, but I am not a strong writter and the lack of responses to my emails has me worried about getting feedback. You said you did comps? Is that the exit exam? How did it go.....I am attempting to do half History and half Poli Sci also. Thanks!

I was told that I could do a thesis, as well, but I'm still trying to get everything organized, and I'm not sure it will get the final nod.

Ultimately, the thesis is not really encouraged, and I think they shy away from letting people do it, because it requires more time and oversight from teachers. Comps are still the easiest, fastest way out for both students/teachers.

At any rate, I've written several longish papers that could serve as a writing sample for Ph.D. programs, if I choose to go that route, even if they are not quite dissertation quality! Good luck to you sir. Keep us posted with the details.

In my experience, some profs can be slow to email, but they will get back to you. Keep in mind this is closing in on the end of the summer semester, so students and profs are quite busy now.

Send an e-mail to Jessica and see if you can get Hernandez as your adviser. He is quick to respond....remember it's summer and they take a lot of time off if they aren't engaged in a class. I expect you can work it out either way. Hernandez offered to let me do a joint thesis History/Criminal Justice but it was my choice. Warren over in CJ discouraged a thesis...I almost felt like he made fun of me for suggesting it, but he did relent if I was determined.

I have changed course a bit. I am still taking Writing courses but I'm no longer sure which of the other programs I will add. Exit requirements for Writing are just an organized portfolio of your work and a paper to go with it....pretty easy really.

I took the comprehensive exam for Political Science this year. A week before the scheduled test I was sent a "study guide" that had 8 questions on it. Each question related to a specific course that I took. On the day of the test I was sent three questions to answer. I was told that each answer was to be at least two single spaced typed pages. I was given a total of 6 hours to respond to the three questions.

Not only that, it was a real blast from the past.

Actually, if you look at the thread listing the OP was in 2008 but the most recent post before yesterday was in 2011. It's just seems like it's one of those threads that is getting bumped every year or so. Now can we delete all these posts about necros because they really are off-topic. Thanks mods.:lick:
