The website and catalog do not state which category TESC considers education credits to be placed in. I am 99% certain they would consider them to be social sciences credits. Could someone confirm? Thanks.

How certain are you? Why do you think so? Do they consider them to be general education electives? Free electives? Thanks.

Why not ask TESC directly - I have always received a reply fron TESC within one ot two working days.
My guess is the education credits would be counted as electives.

I thought they would not talk to you about issues like this unless you are an enrolled student? Email or phone?

Have you tried to contact them?

After all, they are the POC for this information.

WOW! That ruins my plan. I needed them to be general education or social science credits to take advantage of the FEMA credit situation. This means I will need several more CLEP tests to fulfill general education requirements. OUCH!

My experience with "higher" education has been that when you call and ask a question like mine, you get a different answer from every person you talk to. And you get put on hold. And you get the run around. And you get guesses. I trust the experts on this forum that have experience with TESC more than I do the people answering the phones.

Yes, both FEMA and education would be free electives. If you want a bigger list of exams, check out the TECEP options. I found a BIO210 Nutrition exam just in time...I almost started the biology clep LOL.

I emailed TESC just to make it official:

    We have solved your issue
    Solution:

Thank you for your interest in Thomas Edison State College.

Thomas Edison State College requires that you are an enrolled student prior to receiving academic advisement.

I called. On hold for a while. The person that finally got to me said the same thing; they can't tell me if an education credit is a social science, general education, or free elective credit until I enroll. That is why I asked the board. I wish COSC had an English major.

The questions I asked, and got replies to, were about enrollment and second degrees. Sounds like course acceptance questions are handled differently.

    Re COSC
Have looked into their degrees in Individualized studies, liberal studies, or creative writing?

I have. They are all bachelor's degrees in general studies. I plan on getting a degree in English and then getting certified to teach communication arts through the ABCTE program. I don't think a general studies degree would look too good on my resume. It is going to be challenging enough getting hired through the ABCTE program with an English degree.

Do you need a teaching credential to teach in your state?
In California you need one to be able to teach.

I was told education credit hours count as free electives only.

I did some rearranging of credits and changed a planned CLEP that was going to be worth 3 credits to a planned CLEP that will be worth 6 credits. With my education credits only counting as free electives, I will still only have to take the same amount of exams. It should all work out...

...that is IF TESC will accept the following:

Educational Technology as a computer science class (the class was essentially the same as Information Systems and Computer Applications).

Educational Psychology as a psychology course (which would make it a social science, according to their system).

If things don't go exactly like I want with TESC, I may have to take two more CLEPs. No big deal. I could pass one with no study and the other with a couple of days of study.

Have you looked at the DANTES/DSSP tests?
    http://www.getcollegecredit.com/downloads/examlist.pdf
Thirty plus tests available at low cost in variety of subjects.
If you are short of electives they offer a personal finance test that appears to be an easy test (I scored high on the sample test by combination of knowledge and guessing)
