Can anyone recommend a South African DL Doctoral program in Eastern Religions (Buddhism, Hinduism ...) and traditions?

I came across South African Theological Seminary but they don't seem to have this concentration. I have searched the threads but I haven't found anything even closely related to Eastern Studies.

So, if you can recommend any other schools I'd appreciate it. Here's what I'm looking for:
    1. Cheap
    2. Accredited
    3. Eastern Religion focus.

    Thank you for any leads!

That's my area of interest too. I don't know if what you are looking for can be had from South Africa.

SATS is pretty determinedly evangelical protestant. Even if they were willing to entertain a dissertation in eastern religions, I don't think that they would be able to support it.

Your best South African bet might be UNISA. They offer a whole array of programs in Christian history and theology, but that doesn't help us. There is a religious studies department as well that offers the school's peculiar D. Lit. et Phil. degree. That one has three specializations: religious studies, Islamic studies and Arabic, so it looks to be increasingly Islamic-centric.

Here's the department's list of faculty and their areas of specialization, which presumably indicates the areas in which they might be willing to take on doctoral students. There's one current and one retired but still active professor with eastern religions interests.

That's not very inspiring when you compare it to the more powerful B&M eastern philosophy and religion programs outlined in the link below.

You've probably already seen this extensive (but not exhaustive) highly-annotated international listing of graduate programs in eastern religions and philosophy:

It's kind of fascinating to see who's teaching what where, but the only DL program that I saw was Sunderland's Buddhist studies MA.

There may very well be additional DL offerings originating in India or someplace. Indian universities are cheap enough and usually operate in English, but I don't know if they accept non-Indians located outside India.
