I was discussing this was a friend of mine who had just completed her DBA, she is interested in teaching overseas for 1 to 2 years and then returning back to the States. She told me about a website http://www.jobsindubai.com/ and I was wondering from the overseas members and US members also, if you have ever heard of such opportunities that would be a good fit for Americans who want to teach abroad.

I am not sure from the post at what levels you are interested in teaching. If it is just tertiary, there are often jobs, most often in the ME, advertised on higheredjobs.com. Most are regular subject area spots in unis, but some are ESOL in unis as well. Eslcafe.com is likely a great source for ESL jobs all over the world. And if you are intersted in teaching in American or international secondary schools all over the world, opportunities abound. Check out the Search Associates or ISS websites. I am currently teaching HS Econ and History in Malaysia and in most ways it really beats teaching back in the states.

Jesatlarge gives a good rundown concerning the ME . . . try higheredjobs.com, or the Chronicle . . . unis in the ME also post there. For English jobs, definitely eslcafe.com.

BTW, jobsindubai.com is a scam site . . . tell your friend NOT to plunk any money down with them! None of the unis here use recruiters.

Here's a list of unis your friend could try if she is interested in the UAE. Please note, though, that most teaching contracts here are for 3 years.

    UAE University www.uaeu.ac.ae
    Zayed University www.zu.ac.ae
    Higher Colleges of Technology www.hct.ac.ae
    American University of Sharjah www.aus.edu

There are also a bunch more that operate out of one of the free zones, Knowledge Village. Your friend could do a search on KV and see the listing. Some are U of Phoenix, University of Wollongong (Australian), U of Exeter, and a bunch others.

    Cheers,
    Adrienne

Cant remember the url but if you google the dept of Defense education (DODEA) you should find it easily. I interviewed with them 2 years ago but did not take a job. Pay and benes are very good---salary is the average of the 100 largest metro school disctricts in the states. Even better, the accomodation allowance can be very high and you can even buy a home with it. The real downer is that due to cutbacks in staffing there is virtually no hiring except for real specialty stuff like audiologists or Mandarin teachers and stuff like that.

If as part of this, you are interested in teaching English abroad (because many people do both academic area teaching and English teaching), here are two organizations that you will want to take a look at because they both have job advertisements. These are the two largest professional organizations for ESL/EFL teachers in the world.

TESOL is based in Virginia, USA, and has a somewhat more U.S.-centric outlook, but still has a strong English as a foreign language constituency.

IATEFL is based in the UK, but is very much focused on folks wishing to teach English abroad.

Several US universities teach courses at DOD sites around the world. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University being one. So you might want to check their websites or contact them re overseas assignments.

    check

I will review the Embry page. I know there are a number of universities operating with the military. When I was in the balkans in 2001 there were a couple colleges operating there. Also, have seen them in the middle east. Mainly, I am inquiring to see if the pay etc makes a position of this sort worthwhile.
    thanks again.
