I have checked several online colleges and have narrowed my search to Walden U and University of Phoenix.

Does anyone have any insights on regarding either school?

    Thanks!

I'm about halfway through my first class in Walden's EdD in Higher Ed and Adult Learning program, and so far, I'm favorably impressed. It was a long process for me to decide on Walden. I had been dabbling with other programs for a couple of years, and I came to the conclusion that I need a lot of structure, rather than a learning contract or self-paced program. The EdD at Walden is highly structured, with assignments and online discussions due every week.

Regarding the school itself: I resisted online universities, instead looking for a mostly online program offered by a traditional campus. I enrolled at Walden on a whim (I had pretty much given up on my doctoral dream), and no one was more surprised than I to discover how much I like the program. Student services and the library are particularly impressive.

Feel free to PM me if you'd like to engage in more discussion.

Yes. Walden is one of the grande dames of nontraditional (alternative) doctoral education. These days, it is a demanding program.

UoP is a bit of a factory, but a quality education can be had.

Please examine carefully their respective learning methodologies. You will find significant differences that will affect profoundly your doctoral experiences.

As for the resulting degree, all other things being equal, I'd rather have a Walden doctorate than one from UoP.

Not necessarily in Leadership, as I would like an Adult Ed portion as well. Seems Walden offers this more than UoP.

Sounds like we are/were on the same track Tricia! I too have been "getting ready" to do my doctorate for longer than I care to admit. I guess somewhere in the back of my mind I wanted to go traditional and not spend triple on my degree.

But after lots of looking around I found this Walden program that is relatively new (started in September) and seems to be custom made for me! I would start on the next start (10/27) but am moving and starting a new job right around that time, so I thought I would wait for the 1/5 start ... even though it seems far off, it will be here before I know it!

THANKS for your insights! I might be IM'ing you once I land in NE and really start preparing to begin school in January!

I jsut realized you were part of that first class for the degree I am looking at! You could probably answer the question I had for the enrollment counselor...is the first class really just a prep for being online type of class? Do you think I could handle it while starting my new job? (generally 10 hour days, but off in the evenings and weekends). I am very comfortable online, and have taught online for almost 3 years now.

KAM, we are definitely on the same page with our criteria and decision-making processes. I looked at Walden a couple of years ago, but it didn't really jump out at me until they offered the concentration in Higher Ed and Adult Education. I was also hoping to find a less expensive program, but I think I'll be better off in the long run with a program I might actually finish.

Yes, I am in the "inaugural" class with the new concentration of Higher Ed and Adult Learning. I'm not sure what you mean about the first class being a "prep." It seems fully fleshed out to me.

Yes, I think the program can be handled by someone who is working full-time, as long as you have weekends available. There is some participation required during the week, but I find myself doing most of my assignments on the weekends. The program is designed for working educators.

I Agree Tricia, sometimes I kick myself for dragging my feet (as I would already be done), however this Walden program looks like I waited for the right program to come along! :))

I am glad to hear that the first class will really get me in the swing of things for those to come, I was afraid it would be a bit slower paced in order to prepae the non computer user for an online course.

I will probably do the same as you as far as working the courses - the bulk will be done on the weekend.

I would love to stay in touch and compare war stories, although I will be 2 classes behind you. Please feel free to contact me by email so we can stay in contact (and I can pick your brain - of course!! lol)

    Thanks Tricia!
