I only need College Algebra, and I want to take it online for as cheap as possible. It needs to be RA, possibly DETC. If you have a tip for both that would be great. Thanks. Fred

Try Louisiana State University's Independent Study program. I also needed an Algebra course and the cost at LSU was only $241.

    Try your local community college.

Clovis is a great deal. My daughter has enrolled in three courses at Clovis, including College Algebra. The text that Mary Caffey uses (the instructor) is very interactive. You have a computer component as well as the text. The computer component is very helpful with interative charts, voice over lectures, etc.

You have weekly assignments, quizzes, and a proctored midterm & final. You must commit all formulas to memory for the midterm and final. You are permitted to use a graphing calculator for exams.

Clovis also does a nice job of posting syllabi for their online courses on the web: www.clovis.edu/ecampus. This way you can get a good idea for the work that is required for a course.

A three credit online course will be $162 - if you decide to enroll in an additional three credits, your total cost is only $212.

I can obviously take it there, but if I can take it online, I will save my tuition in gas alone. Thanks.

WOW. It looks like $122 for a 3 credit hour course online, AND THE SAME ($122) if I take two 3 credit courses ($122 total!!!).

Have you checked to see if the local CC offers it online?

Heck, try other CCs in the same state.

I've done this a few times for courses already-- taken them online through other CCs. The time savings, cost savings and flexibility are fantastic.

Sowak, Community Colleges are MUCH cheaper usually. If you're a state resident, they're in the ballpark of $60-$80 per credit hour (so $180-$240 for a 3 credit course like College Algebra).

Tulsa Community College is $57.50 for state residents and $201.25 for non-residents, for example.

Thank you everyone for all of the advice to take it locally. Yes, I can take it locally. I understand that. I assumed that on a distance learning forum everyone would assume I was talking about distance learning. If I take it online, I can save my tuition money in gas alone. Clovis it is, for $122 + books I can take 2 online courses.

My local CC would be $240 plus gas.

Thanks again, and sorry for not being more specific.

There is a $50 fee for each online course. There is a link on the tuition page that takes you to the additional fee table.

Still - Clovis is a great deal.

LOL. I see. Technology fee PLUS an online course fee. LOL. Tricky. Still a great deal. For brick and mortar near me, gas alone would be about $120 plus $240 for the course. $172 is much better than $360. DEAL. SOLD. SIGN ME UP!

Have you taken any math courses for college credit? If not, you will need to speak to the folks at Clovis about taking the Accuplacer for placement purposes. Clovis will NOT permit you to waive the placement assessment requirement.

The Accuplacer can be done via the web, you will just need to make arrangements with a proctor (which you will have to do for your midterm and final anyway).

No, but I have successfully passed a math placement test at St. Charles Community College and have the documentation. Thanks for all of the info.

If you have the ability to burn through an Algebra class in one month, it's actually possible to finish it through Straighterline for $99. They have changed their pricing so you can take as many classes as you want for $99 per month. Once you complete the course, the credit is awarded by either Fort Hayes State U, Grand Canyon U, Jones IU, Potomac College, or Ellis.

That looks promising. Anyone have any input about Straighterline?
