Hey guys, I need help with a decision. I'm looking to add on to my MPA for marketability (I'll need it in this economy) and I have no experience. What would look better on my resume? A nationally accredited Master in Psychology from California Coast University OR A regionally accredited Social and Community Services Graduate Certificate from Capella University Thanks in advance for any helpful insight you can provide me.
Where did you get your BS and MPA? Just off the top of my head, I would select none of the above. I would add a big name school (of course you may have that in your BS or MPA) to your resume. I took a 9 credit graduate certificate program from the University of Florida to add some "name power" to my resume.
No big name power here (TESC & AMU)... I'm not necessarily looking for big name power but an added credential which would be psychology or social work related. (That can be done fast) So what if I twisted your arm and made you choose?
Are you pursuing the MPA from AMU? If so, how is it? I have a buddy that's interested in that program.
The fastest way to enhance your resume is to join a professional organization related to the work you want to do. For example when I applied for a adjunct position teaching quality assurance I joined ASQ (American Society for Quality). What employers are looking for for is someone who is intelligent enough to perform the job. Academic credentials are very often secondary to job skills and work experience.
Makana, I am. I just started but I really love it so far. The administration is set up to run smoothly, the assignments are relevant and interesting - I am very happy there.
There is an article on Pro organizations on page 16 of this Excelsior Live & Learn magazine https://www.excelsior.edu/portal/page/portal/EC_Live_and_Learn_Portlets/Nav_SubHome_LiveAndLearn/Live_and_Learn_Magazine_Fall_Winter_2007.pdf
Personally, I think Capella is very expensive. Since I graduated from CCU with a BS and MBA...I would have to you for CCU!
