    Hello Everyone.

I'm currently enlisted in the Air Force, and taking courses with UMUC purusing a degree in Computer Information Technology.

I was just curious on everyones opionion on this school, and program.

If this isn't a good program, can someone please recommend one for me?

I'm looking to get out at the end of my enlistment, and would like a degree that would help me get a job, so any help is appreciated.

Distance learning is a must for me, with the changing of shifts, and possibility of deploying.

    Again, thank you in advance.

CH-AIR FORCES, huh? Well, the school is okay, but it is not the same as University of Maryland at College Park, Baltimore and etc. I recommend East Carolina University

    Active military pay in-state tuition.

With anything - there are better and worst to choose from. If you are far along with your degree, it may not be worth looking at any changes. UMUC is regionally accreditied so it is acceptable by that standard. When you ask, "If this isn't a good program, can someone please recommend one for me?" you also must ask yourself what you want out of the program. Do you want to learn computer networking or programming? Do the classes provide you with the education you want/need to complement your experience and position you to get the job you want?

I think TEKMAN's comment of, "Well, the school is okay, but it is not the same as University of Maryland at College Park" is a spin-off of a recent thread regarding misrepresenting one school for another and discussing the differences in quality.

My wife graduated from UMUC while we were at Lakenheath. She used that degree to get into a graduate program at one of the local state universities when we returned CONUS. I have zero issues with the school beyond some administrative issues that were specific to the offices she had to deal with in Europe.

Chair force days are long gone. Some people just refuse to admit it.

Mount Olice College has a lot of airforce students (Seymour Johnson AFB) who go there online.

    POC is [email protected]

Thank you everyone for your answers!

I guess what I'm worried about more than anything is being able to find a job with it when I get out.

Airtorn your comment about your wife is good to hear!

UMUC is fine. My UMUC transcript gained me admission to a highly selective public university.

Since you're enlisted, I'll urge you to stretch your GI Bill and tuition assistance dollar:

-Investigate other service-friendly schools, as well: Capitol College, Oklahoma, Webster U., Chapman, National U. are but a few.

-If you're still taking lower division general ed courses, consider a community college. Investigate CCAF.

    -Take CLEP and DANTES exams.

I agree with Daniel. Just use your Tuition Assistance for now, and save your GI Bill with the New Program until you get out. Where you'll receive BAH while at school. I am doing the same thing, where SMU is hurting my pocket.

I would recommend you to switch to East Carolina University because their tuition only $99.00 per semester credit, where you can get 45 credits from $4,500.00 per fiscal year.

BTW, ECU (Pirates) beated Virginia Tech on the other day. :)

Ya I do plan on just using my TA right now.

I have my CCAF already, and am on track to have my BS by the time my enlistment is over.

    Thank you again!

The concern you express about finding employment in the field of information technology is valid and indicates you have taken some time to consider your options post-enlistment.

The information technology field is very broad as it touches most aspects of modern organizations including government, health care, education, financial services, business, etc. The degree from UMUC will provide a sound foundation and will expose you to a variety of areas in the realm of information technology. Have you given any thought as to what specific type of employment you want to pursue?

Currently I'm working Sys. Admin for a Weather Squadron.

A lot of hands on with servers, workstations, and different OS's.

I have already started to network out, and have made a pretty good contact at general dynamics, who has already told me he will get me in contact with the right people when the time comes.

I think I'd really like to do security type work and/or networking, all of which UMUC offers classes on.
