A university professor I know agreed to serve on his former student's doctoral committee. The student had enrolled at Capella University. The professor is new to distance ed, but he found the experience rather pleasant. He was of service to his student, didn't have to travel, and got paid a modest stipend of $500.

We did find this part odd, though. Capella contacted him recently to ask if he would like to apply to join Capella as adjunct faculty. But Capella requires a fee of $250 submitted with his application. They told him it's a processing fee that will go toward software and computer upgrades. Seems reasonable, but is it standard practice to require such a fee before he is even offered employment?

I find the $250 fee odd. Are you sure? I serve as an adjunct and have written courses for Capella and never paid a fee to apply to work for them.

As a grad & state practicuum and internship coordinator I find this rather difficult to believe. Could be that his computer was not compatible and he needed to bring it up to standard and the amount to do this would be $250. Just doesn't sound like something a class university like Capella would do. Howard Rodgers, PhD (Capella, 2000).

Thanks. I'll check again. Maybe Capella needs to bring his computer into the 21st century, and they are just letting him know of possible fees before he applies. I'll let you know if it does turn out to be a straight app fee.
