Hello I'm new to this forum and I'm looking for online courses in thanatology (study of death, dying, bereavement and loss). I hold a PhD in Applied Thanatology from an accredited university and my principle areas of specialization are in community and individual critical incident / disaster thanatology was well as in applied pastoral thanatology. Does anyone know of online schools that have courses on thanatology at any level? I'm also willing to do continuing education online instruction. Additionally what schools might be receptive to designing such programs? Thanks for all your help. Best to ya Terrie Modesto
Talk about FAST service! Hi Thank you so much for the rapid information. I am so pleased. Just called the department ant e the course official is out of the office so I let a message. Best to ya Terrie
From Wikopedia: Currently Hood College is the only school that offers a full Masters degree in Thanatology in the United States.
thanks so much VERY interesting approach to studying thanatology. Will be contacting them this week. I so appreciate you taking the time to find this school for me. I would love to develop an international list of all thanatological schools with death related online education programs. I think that would help the thanatological discipline greatly. Anyone else have any ideas or thoughts on how I could go about this? Hood is an excellent school You are so right! Hood is an excellent school. I was in their first post graduate certificate program and the Chair of the Department Dr. Dana Cable was so gracious to sit on my doctoral committee and provided exceptional insight in my dissertation process. I would highly recommend that anyone wanting an advance degree or a post graduate certificate in the subject of death, dying, bereavement and loss go there. It is a very intensive program with great thanostic leadership. The campus at Hood is beautiful and the community of Frederick Maryland is wonderful with the charm of a smaller town and the advantages of a regional city. Everything you could want. Warning, the tuition is higher than some schools of its size yet it is one of the top 50 private regionally accredited colleges in the United States according to USA Today, so it is well worth the price. It has been ranked up there consistently for the past 10+ years I believe. With death being a common occurrence in every community and society around the world since the beginning of time and life -- one would think that it would be studied more from an academic position. My thought is that there is such a deep and all prevailing death phobia in the 20th century and now extending into the 21st century that it affects even the academic study of the subject at institutions of higher learning of all sizes and locations. The richness of the multidisciplinary contributions to the academic study of thanatology is fascinating and sheds thought provoking light onto such a dark and foreboding subject. Thanatology is so much more than a topic for Halloween! OK the thanatologist is NOW stepping off her soap box. Sorry for the lengthy discourse! Thanks again for all your help with this. You are all so generous and helpful and I appreciate it so much. Not only are there online courses, but you can also get an online certificate which has the required education needed to become a Certified Thanatologist. See this previous thread: http://www.degreeinfo.com/general-distance-learning-discussions/42152-thanatology.html
