    Hello everybody,

I am looking on information on getting certified as a teacher. A friend opf mine want to emigrate to new zealand/ ausralia area.

Just like me he has a BBA in hospitality management. In the Netherlands he would need to do another degree to get certified as a teacher ( takes about 2 to 3 years) Subject is not the problem, he just want the certificate for immigration purposes.

Can anyone advise on the shortest route possible either in europe or in usa?

    Thanks

Here http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27725 is a fairly comprehensive state-by-state list of distance learning master's programs in education in the United States. You might look through the thread and start clicking on links to find which are certification-eligible.

Usually when someone asks about teacher certification they're asking about K-12 certification for teaching kids. A Masters degree is not required in order to teach elementary/middle/high school (although many school systems require you to earn one eventually). Teacher certification requires a set of fairly standard courses in the area of Education and it requires a student teaching internship. All these things are specified by the state in which you intend to work. Each state has a website that will point you toward the Dept. of Education and that site will provide the information you are requesting. There isn't a big demand for teachers of hospitality managment in elementary schools. If you're talking about becoming a teacher at the college level then Ted's advice holds true (although there is no "certification" involved).

The master's isn't required (at least not in most states) to teach elementary and secondary school. However, if one already has a bachelor's (which need not be in education), one can get their teaching certification at the master's level, rather than taking a second bachelor's.

Yes, although it's not usually necessary to earn any degree (assuming you already have a BA). Typically you can just take a few education courses in order to complete the course requirements. And don't forget, even earning a Masters doesn't eliminate the need to do a student teaching internship.

Generally to get a teaching license you'll need to take courses in the following areas:

    1) Educational Foundations
    2) Human Growth & Development
    3) Classroom Management
    4) Curriculum and Instruction
    5) Reading in the Content Area

Elementary licenses may also require courses in language acquisition or other reading coursework.

In the US you'll also have to do an internship, though some states allow you to start under a provisional or conditional license, and that time will be considered your student teaching. You'll also have to take a few tests, usually the Praxis I and Praxis II Subject Test.
