****Can FEMA courses be used for this section?*************

Well, here it is folks. Please advise. What FEMA courses can she take? What are the easiest CLEP, and DANTES test for her to take to fill some of the required areas? Please advise.

    Thanks,

    Abner

    Evaluation

Good Morning, I would suggest she take the FEMA EMI courses to fill up the free electives. I will try and dig out one of my husbands transcripts and see what they took. She should be able to knock off those credits prior to the deadline for 2008 graduation. Hille

Yes, FEMA courses can be used as free electives. I used them as free electives when I earned my degree from TESC.

BA Free Electives (27 Semester hours)

    *semester hours completed = 10.5
    *Semester hours remaining = 16.5>>

Yes, FEMA works here. One thing, don't have her do 27 credits worth, she only needs-and can use- 17.

The additional hours are just a few CLEP exams away! Based on her "base knowledge" I would suggest she try the CLEP Social Science and History exam for 6 credits. A few hours of study with the REA book will do the trick
This will come in as 100 level, so it will fall first into her Gen Ed requirement, then the remaining 3 into her Gen Ed elective.

Additionally, for an easy "in major" 200 level course, have her sit the CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Literature for 6 big credits! No study needed on that one.

If she hammers out the above three items this week, she is only 14 credits away from graduating! Any chance that she would like to take a SPANISH exam? They award INSANE amounts of credit for passing a foreign language.

Thanks Hillie, Pug and Jennifer! I would really love a list of specific FEMA courses (17 credits worth?) for Kim to start on. I feel this would help her motivation level, and make her feel like she is making progress. Also, maybe a short list of CLEP and DANTES.

Jennifer, good suggestion on the Spanish exam. Something to think about. She understands Spanish very well, and has good pronounciation, but she is shy when it comes to speaking it. We will have to think about that one.

Did anyone notice the credit given for PE classes? I am happily surprised. When I applied at COSC a couple of years ago, they gave zero credit for PE classes. I just figured the big three did not give any credit for PE classes. This made our day!

Thanks everybody! We appreciate your help in this. Hopefully, starting tomorrow, she can start working on some of the FEMA courses.

    Have a good one!

    Abner :)

    Fema Courses

This list was taken from another thread elsewhere on the board:

The first list below was posted by Michael Gates on another thread. He successfully transferred all of them to TESC. Some of these have since been discontinued by FEMA, but I was able to successfully transfer about 28 or so. Any still offered by FEMA will be accepted, just check the FEMA site. The EDM numbers are TESC's equivalencies; the IS numbers are FEMA:

    EDM 101 - IS001
    EDM 102 - IS002
    EDM 103 - IS007
    EDM 107 - IS230
    EDM 120 - IS120
    EDM 121 - IS324
    EDM 122 - IS288
    EDM 123 - IS195
    EDM 124 - IS275
    EDM 126 - IS208
    EDM 130 - IS279
    EDM 140 - IS393
    EDM 154 - IS005
    EDM 155 - IS346
    EDM 172 - IS301
    EDM 190 - IS008
    EDM 191 - IS010
    EDM 192 - IS011
    EDM 193 - IS111
    EDM 200 - IS292
    EDM 203 - IS139
    EDM 207 - IS240
    EDM 208 - IS241
    EDM 209 - IS242
    EDM 210 - IS244
    EDM 221 - IS630
    EDM 222 - IS600
    EDM 223 - IS015
    EDM 224 - IS235
    EDM 225 - IS631
    EDM 232 - IS386
    EDM 240 - IS009
    EDM 241 - IS394
    EDM 242 - IS271
    EDM 290 - IS632
    EDM 303 - IS513
    EDM 390 - Q534
    EDM 399 - IS003

The second list are FEMA courses that are currently offered by FEMA that I believe would be accepted by TESC. I base this on the fact that FCC (Frederick Community College) has these courses in its school catalog with corresponding EDM matches.

IS-253 Coordinating Environment & Historis Perservation Compliance

IS-271 Anticipating Hazardous Weather & Community Risk

IS-302 Modular Emergency Response Radiological Transportation Training

    IS-324 Community Hurricane Preparedness

    IS-331 Introduction to Radiological Emergency

    IS-340 Hazardous Materials Prevention

IS-346 Orientation to Hazardous Materials for Medical Personel

IS-362 Multi-hazard Emergency Planning for Schools

IS-386 Introduction to Residential Coastal Construction

    IS-632 Debris Operations

Ok, now I'm not 100% sure, but over on the InstantCert forum they just had few a big threads on the foreign language exams, and I "think" CLEP is only multiple choice and listening- no speaking at all! You may want to zip over there and search. It's really not something I know much about, but I think foreign language competency can net you 14+ credits. I think there are a few options besides CLEP too, and the BEST thing to know about your foreign language credit, is that it is humanities- so those credits are in her major!

    Hi Jennifer,

She already took Analyzing and Interpreting Lit, I just forgot to list it the first time. I am going to check into the CLEP Social Science and History exam for 6 credits. Any othe suggestions on CLEP or DANTES that would fit her needs?

    Thanks!

My suggestion is to visit www.tesc.edu and pull up the pdf College Catalog. Somewhere around page 104-106ish you will find 3 pages of exam to course equivalencies. This list needs to be her bible. Print it out. Each and every exam is listed, and you'll have no surprises.
Next, print off the degree template/requirements and compare the open slots with the available choices. It's quite fun actually, be sure not to deprive her of that :)
She has taken a good number of arts and science courses (unlike myself when I started) so she probably has strong preferences in how she would like to meet her remaining credits.
My suggestion is still Spanish first, and if time or money are motivators, to use the 6 credit exams. (social science and history seems like a good fit) Personally, I liked the 3 credit exams, but I would probably be in the minority with that opinion. In my opinion, 3 credit exams were very predictable-I felt less safety with the 6 credit exams.

Just thought I should comment about the Spanish...
I took the NYU Language proficiency exam. You can either 'go for' 12 or 16 credits. I took the exam and there's no oral.
Section One: you listen to a tape and answer questions...
Section two: Write a 150 word essay on a 'general' topic... they give you topics to choose from, all pretty basic like 'my family'...
Section three: translate a paragraph from spanish to english
Section four: translate a paragraph from english to spanish

Section Five:--- this section you get if you're doing the 16 credit exam
you need to write a 350 word persuasive essay.
For part five you really need a command on the language, a full vocabulary to properly bring across your points in a persuasive matter.

(You can either go to NYU for the exam or have it proctored somewhere else--- I did it at the local library...)

    hope this is helpfu.

By what you are saying, I don't think she could complete this exam. The writing and listening part sounds brutal, and I am fluent in written and spoken Spanish! Thanks so much for your feedback though.

Ok folks, I have a list of FEMA courses. Here is what I have so far for CLEPS:

*CLEP - Social Science and History exam = 6 credits

Anymore? Keep them coming folks! We would really appreciate it!

if you are flient in spanish it's really no big deal!... it's worth 16 credits and it's not a pass or fail... I have a friend who 'sort of knows hewbrew' and she got 8 credits...
so it really might be worth a try...

How much did it cost? This is off the subject, but I might try it out myself. I might go back for a BA in labor studies from TESC when I am done with my MBA. I guess it would go toward humanities? I already took the spanish CLEP, and I took Spanish in College.

    Is-317

FEMA no longer has a course IS-317 Introduction to Community Emergency Response Teams. The IS-317 link on the FEMA website now leads to a new IS-317 course that is offered on another website. Completion on this new IS-317 course will not be added to a FEMA transcript or a FEMA certificate issued. A certificate different than in the past is issued. I do not know if TESC will accept this new certificate.

Thanks. I crossed it off the list. My wife and I just took IS-007 and passed! Pretty cool.

When I took the tests, I printed them out so I would have a copy of my answers if I needed to do any over--which I did. I would go through the first 12 questions and correct the errors I found. When I resubmitted the test, it became a 'pass' and saved me the time of going through all the questions. I think I only had to redo two tests--probably due to rushing through them or getting distracted. :)
