What are the schools that tend to have a bad reputation in the market place? I know many people who give them a bad rep do not even know anything about DL or even have had an experience with the school, but the rumor mill automatically makes them discount the school.

The ones I know about are:

    ITT Technical Institute
    Devry
    The University of Pheonix
    Strayer University

I am not saying these are bad schools. I went to ITT Technical Institute and it has helped me excel in telecommunications.

I am going to attend The Keller Graduate school of Management - on campus, and was wondering what you guys have heard concerning this school. I know it is a part of Devry, but was not sure if it was taken with more of a serious tone.

I actually like Devry and know many people who have went there for regionally accredited degrees.

Most people around here in IL are familiar with the school as there are many Devry and Keller campuses around the area also, so they know Keller = Devry.

What are some other schools that are known by you guys to have a bad rep. from people?

Bad reputation? You're kidding me! Our future President McCaine, has good word about the University of Phoenix. URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NP88HnV4jIg

I don't know about the other schools, but I don't think Devry has actually a bad name. Many graduates have good jobs in industry and have many campuses in US and Canada. Devry is not Harvard for sure, but I don't think you would be getting less than any other no name school.

I wish ITT would of had their computing degree when i was there. I had to do electronics for my AAS and then Telecom for my BA.... I still ended up in the IT field either doing test or desktop support before it all fell apart.....

Keller Graduate School of Management was established in the 1970s (IIRC) as a stand-alone graduate non-profit regionally accredited university and established its own (good) reputation in the workplace. The association with Devry was made only in 2001 when the two institutions (Devry Institute of Technology and Keller) merged into what is now known as Devry University. While I've heard of some complaints about some undergraduate programs on specific campuses, I don't think Devry has a bad reputation overall, and I don't think Keller has a bad rep at all.

I attended KGSM for my MBA (didn't finish there as I found the workload on the particular campus I attended -- and the online campus, too -- to be unreasonable for full-time working people), but I never got any flak from my employer (a top state university in the U.S.) for studying there and in fact got promoted in part due to my graduate units from KGSM. During my time there (between 2001 and 2003), KGSM was ranked one of the top 7 business schools in the country by one financial magazine (can't remember right now if it was Entrepreneur, Success, Businessweek, or another publication) for the most preferred corporate training programs by Fortune 500 companies.

DeVry was actually the butt of a joke on an episode of the FOX animated series "Family Guy":

Man 1: Hey, did I tell you my son got into DeVry?
Man 2: What did he do, open the door?

    Ouch.

ITT and Devry are definitely a joke. University of Phoenix is another one that is laughed at in the working world. North central university, Kaplan etc...basically any University that started as an online college is a joke and a waste of money. Your best best is to find an program through a traditional university that offers online programs. Also look for regionally accredited unis only. Many of these state schools that have been around a while are actually cheaper too. Cheaper, better education and more respected. Stick with real universities. Good luck.

I don't know about Devry's undergraduate programs, but Keller for sure doesn't have a bad reputation in my current workplace, which funded two of my colleagues' studies. I've also taken some courses there and found the courses both useful and very rigorous.

Don't mean to jump in Razor but the schools you mentioned are accredited. Personally I wouldn't go to UoP either but not for the same reasons. My military TA wouldn't even cover half of the tuition. I agree that b&M schools with online programs are preferred, but for a lot of people there options are limited. Take AMU for example, an online school but there undergrad tuition falls under the military TA cap and they provide a book grant.

And I forgot to mention, Keller also has a very strong B&M presence (while it has online programs, it certainly is not an online school).

I wouldn't call ITT a joke. One of class mates got a job working for the CIA based on his ITT degree, Schlumburger hires ITT graduates all the time, I worked for Dell with my ITT degree. Said ITT degree also got me interviews with AMD, XO communitcations, Cisco, and some antena building company... So i wouldn't say a joke.

Please remeber guys that bad reps come from dissatisfied customers. Maybe those customers are dissatisfied because they flunked out. If somebody tells you that a school sucks try to figure out if this is just a disgruntled (poor) student or if there's a legitimate complaint. Even if the complaint is legitimate, it's just one complaint. For example, I really don't think that I'd be happy being a student at U of P. But I'm not ready to say that this school doesn't work well for many people (obviously it does).

I never attended any of these schools...I just gathered my opinion from different HR personal that I've talked to about them(probably 8-10 in all). I attended a state school that was founded around the turn of the 20th century.

Well maybe their IT degrees are more valuable than some of the other degrees. I had a friend that graduated from ITT(in graphic design) and he can't find a job anywhere.

I'm no fan of ITT. This is based primarily on the lack of transferability of their credits. Beyond that I don't know anything about ITT. If your friend can't get a job it's not necessarily the fault of the school he attended (no offense intended). I know people with RA degrees who can't hold a job for more than a year. I don't blame their school.

This is idiotic hyperbole, utterly unsupported.

Thank you for that scintillating anecdote, unsupported in the least. It means nothing for an anonymous poster to cite his personal experiences, nor that of the friends he "had."

Just thought I'd offer the countering view.
