I thought this had already happened some time back, this is from the latest e-mail from Educause

EDUCAUSE ASSUMES RESPONSIBILITY FOR .EDU REGISTRATIONS

The U.S. government has signed a five-year agreement with EDUCAUSE
<http://www.educause.edu>, placing control of .edu domain registration
in the hands of the not-for-profit industry/education consortium. One
of EDUCAUSE's first steps will be to open up applications for .edu
addresses to community colleges, which were previously excluded from
the .edu domain when it was reserved for four-year institutions.

    For more information, see <http://www.educause.edu/edudomain/>.

Interesting that only regionally accredited institutions will be granted a .edu domain, and only one per institution. Current owners of .edu domains will, however, appear to be "grandfathered."

It is too bad that .MIL is taken... Educause could put it to good use.

ROFLMAO! If we can't use .MIL, what about .ML? .ML is Mali (not Malawi, unfortunately). Perhaps we could do a deal with the Mali government to sell .ML domain names?
