I am currently working on my MBA. I hope to be done by around March or April of 2009. After that, I want to round out my resume with an B.S./B.A. degree in Labor Studies/Labor relations. I would appreciate any and all suggestions, NA or RA, doesn't matter. Tedmeister, I would appreciate the help of your legendary research skills! I do know TESC has a BA or BS in Labor studies, so I will keep that in mind. I also know about the National Labor College (George Meaney), but they do not have a 100% DL program. Thanks so much! Abner
Hi Abner, Empire State College has a BS/BA in Labor Stuides, available through DL. Cost is $181 per credit hour. Empire State is RA. I'm surprised Empire State doesn't get mentioned more often. They have a wide variety of DL programs, and the cost is very reasonable. I hope this helps.
would you be willing to round up? These programs are a great price http://www.clms.edu/academicprograms.html
I really do like the look of the University of Leicester's programs, and have considered one for myself (MSc in Communication, Media Studies and Public Relations). For me, it's really a toss-up between UoL and Heriot-Watt.
Why not aim for a masters degree in labor studies? It would command more respect, require about the same number of units (around 30-36), although cost may be a little higher, and you may be able to transfer some of your MBA units. I'm sure Degreeinfo board participants can offer suggestions (My MAeroSci accepted 9 units from my MSQA)..
I know you said cheap, but here goes anyway... http://www.capella.edu/schools_programs/business_technology/masters/industrial_labor_relations.aspx
I agree; I think it's very rare indeed when a second Bachelor's degree is more useful than a Master's degree. Empire State also offers a M.A. in Labor & Policy Studies; http://www.esc.edu/esconline/online2.nsf/html/mainlaborandpolicy.html
That's true, but Empire State requires an RA bachelor's for admission to its graduate programs, and I believe Abner has a NA undergrad degree. If going for the MA, University of Leicester would be a good choice. They don't even require an undergrad degree.
I was thinking the same thing. I remember when I earned my BS I considered doing an Associate's degree. A guidance counselor said, "Why step down? You have a Bachelor's degree. Step up and keep moving ahead -- not backwards." Roscoe
Thanks everybody! Did anyone notice how flexible Empire State is as far as transfer credit? Incredible, I will definitely keep Empire State in mind. I might also email the President of the National Labor College to see if they could consider starting a 100% DL program. I know, two Bachelor's degree do not make sense to some. After I finish my MBA, I will just be pursuing degrees for the love it, nothing more, nothing less. I want to pursue the Bachelor's because for the first time in my life, I would get some monetary assitance from someone as far as a scholarship (my employer does not pay for education). In this case, it is my union. I am a non paid Job Steward/Organizer (In other words I am a worker who is certified to represent the union, but I am not a payroll union staff person). If I qualify, I would only get $5,000.00 to be spread out over two years. The Empire State B.S. would cost me roughly $6,000.00 + with a 90 credit transfer). So I would have to kick in some out of pocket money towards the end (I am guessing $1,200.00 or so). The Empire State University of New York name sure would look sweet on my resume. In my case, if I wanted to go to work on the unions payroll, all I would have to do is ask. My reputation is good enough, and my education won't hurt either. Thanks! Keep em coming if you have anymore schools in mind!!! Abner
Cornell has a few online labor courses for union reps at: http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/laborPrograms/leadership/laborStudies/online/index.html
Great find bro! This program kicks nalgas! I know I could file this stuff in my favorites, but I am going to print these different programs out on paper, and file them away for next year. At least I could start asking questions in the meanwhile, I have to say this is a great find though. Keep em coming folks! Abner
