[B]I do not know if anyone else feels this way, but I have always wanted to be good at math.

In high school I took Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics.

I got through most of those classes with a C or maybe a B-, but the concepts did not stick and I was always terrible at them even when I attempted many many practice problems.

I have a goal one day (I have no idea when) to sit down and take math courses, when I am done with pursuing my masters degree, and improve my math skills.

I may do this when I finish my Masters Degree, but I am not sure yet as I want to focus on the skills that can increase my payrate at work (like attaining a CCIE).

I hope to one day take each course, one at a time, one right after the other, paying attention to the curriculum and learning it very well building a strong mathematical foundation knowing I will be building off of it in the next class. Just for my own personal gain and to become a math genius over the span of many many years.

I have taken probably about 3 or 4 problem solving or other business or electronics math courses in college, but I am rusty in many things as I always use a calculator (a WYSIWYG calculator actually).

I am thinking about starting all the way back to the basics because I literally cannot remember all the nuances of doing long division on paper showing my work (not that I could not pick it up again fast).

Looking at a local community college's catalog and the catalog for the University of TN Knoxville, I looked at their classes as a good layout and path to follow:

Some of what I just found blows my mind. Reading the descriptions for these graduate level courses makes my brain turn sideways. I have never heard of most of the words used in the description of these classes:

I took have a desire to improve upon my math skills. However, the above graduate course list makes me want to crawl under my desk and assume a fetal position! ;)

Scariest sounfing math course EVER: Enumerative Combinatorics 2

Why are there 2 4 hour long classes covering this subject! Sounds like one of those classes that changes your life in a bad way.

firstmode4c,

If you're interested in a review but not interested in taking classes, I found this British maths review site helpful. Please note the subjects listed in the left-hand pane are in alphabetical, not increasing level of difficulty, order. Each section has a video where the subject is quickly explained - it is a review, after all - along with a .pdf topic guide and some exercises.

Also for calculus you can use Adrian Banner's excellent Calculus Lifesaver book and video Website. The first chapter of the book is available at the link (along with purchase instructions for the book) plus two dozen videotaped lectures. Just like being in class.

If you're in for something more advanced, don't forget the perennial favorite of self-learners, MIT's OpenCourseWare site of class outlines and supplementary materials.

Good luck,
Mark

I think this is a great goal! I tried something like it once*. I pushed myself into the differential equations, number theory section of your list and then I had to sadly admit to myself that I was out of my depth. What I told myself at that time was that the only way I could continue to progress was if I had a personal tutor who could explain, in painstaking detail, over and over, every time I did not get it. I would sit in class and begin to get that feeling that I was losing touch with the material. Then I would look around and it seemed clear that many others were actually right with the instructor. I was taking Thermodynamics and Special Relativity at the same time. I learned some fascinating material but I knew that I had reached my limit. Again, I think that your goal is a great one. Push yourself. I never regreted my attempt.

* compliments to UMass-Boston. In my opinion, an underrated school.

I was a virtual math moron in high school. I took all of the basic courses, because that's all I could grasp. I couldn't even solve algebra problems until I took the Penn Foster College Math for Business and Finance course, which actually does cover a lot of algebra. The textbook for that course was fantastic, and taught me something my high school math teachers never could.

I don't have a burning desire to master anything more complicated, really. My real passion lies in history. I am a History Channel junkie and I destroy my co-workers at Trivial Pursuit. It is my dream one day to get a graduate degree in history, and perhaps even teach it to other students via DL, after I retire from my "real" job and I'm living in Mexico or Panama. In fact, I read history web sites and text books for fun. My family hates going to history museums with me, because I could literally spend an entire weekend in them. I especially enjoy studying the American Civil War.

So, do I want to study more math? Nope. That's why God made calculators.

I love your goal. I totally understand it.
I have a romantic image of being good at math and science. I was so excited when I signed up for biology 101 this year. Holy cow, it was a lot harder than I thought. I remember biology from high school, but this 101 class kicked my butt. It was a hard "B" to earn (my only B!) and I actually only passed my final exam by the skin of my teeth. I wanted to drop that class every single week.
As it turns out, what I love is actually called "6th grade science" :) Who knew?

So, I get it, I really do. I love smart people- math and science people process things differently. (my oldest son is one of those people) I just think there are things that come naturally to some people, and the rest of us have to work very hard to develop that skill. What requires a great deal of concentration for me is something my son might see without effort- like in a logic problem.

I also have failed miserably in foreign languages- something that I would like to try again without the pressure of needing the credit. Maybe after this masters.
