Has anyone here used Credit Banking, like Excelsior College, to finish their degree?

Any info of good or bad stories would be helpul.

    All the best,

The Credit Bank isn't for earning a degree. It is for accumulating all one's credits in one place. The Credit Bank service is included when students enroll in degree programs.

It has been reported here that more than 95,000 people have graduated from Excelsior (and its two previous incarnations, Regents College and the USNY Regents External Degree Program). I'm one of those (or three of them, if they're counting individual degrees to get that total).

    Rich, thanks for the reply.

Besides getting a degree from an institution like Excelsior, it was my understanding that they offered a "Credit Banking" service to place credits in one place.

My ulimate question is this: Has anyone used this service and transfered their credits (such as those earned from exams) to another college or university to help finish their degree?

Many schools will accept credit from a RA school, but not exams.

Every school I've been to has wanted transcripts from everywhere, even if the transcript in question only has one class on it. So my guess is credit banking isn't much use for folks seeking to transfer credits.

People who get the most good from it are those who have some sort of continuing education requirement for a professional license, certification, etc. Having all their credits in one place can save them some headaches.

    Regards.

Credit banking will not work if the purpose is for obtaining credit to circumvent a course at another college. I inquired about this in an area of the medical field. I could bank some seminars at Excelsior and they would count them but the school I wanted to transfer them to would not take them. Seems that more and more of the loopholes are being closed. Maybe good, maybe bad.....who knows.

I know that at least several RA universities will accept CLEP and DANTES exams as transfer credit if they are transcribed by another RA school, but will not accept all of them directly. Southwest Texas State University is one example. They accept (and administer) some CLEP exams directly, but others, such as English Composition, are only accepted if they have been transcribed by another school. It seems like a bizarre way to handle it, but the policy is in place nonetheless.

There is no broad rule for this; you really need to contact the school(s) that you are interested in to see how they handle it.
