Finishing an MBA after 10 years???

Does anybody have any suggestions for someone who completed all requirements for an MBA except the final capstone course? Some of the credits are 10 years old now and returning to the original school to finish up is not an option (brick & mortar school - out of the area). This is not for me, I was researching it for a friend but so far all the programs I have found only except up to 18 credits at the most. I have the feeling they will have to take some courses over but I just wanted to reach out to you guys to see if there are any alternatives.

Given the age of the credits, and the frequency with which business school curricula can change, even going back to the original school might not be an option. But seeing as he only lacks one class, your friend might try calling his original school to see if he can transfer a class from another school into his original program. I know of a friend's father whose masters program in journalism was interrupted by military service who was able to finish his degree by taking a single class at a different school (over twenty years later!) and transferring it back. YMMV, but it's certainly worth the effort to try.

 

The original school is not an option. It is a brick and mortar school that is out of the area. They do not even have an online option. Thanks for the tips though.

 

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the idea. Schools frequently "bend the rules" and make accommodations. What can it hurt to just call them and see? Also, if you get a "no" from one person, try talking to another person or even the school's dean directly.

 

Again, the idea is to request to transfer an acceptable course that is an option (local B&M or online) to finish the degree. As mentioned, the first call I would make would be to the original school to see if there are ANY options. I would likely go straight to the MBA Director or Dean.

I don't know of any program that allows more than 50% of the courses in transfer for an MBA... most are 6-9 credits and nearly all have limits of 3-7 years on the age of the credits. One possible exception is Excelsior College.

FWIW, my cousin finished her Columbia law degree off campus!! This was due to an illness and there certainly was some rule bending there.

I completed a portion of my undergrad (B&M AACSB) from the hospital bed...again rules were bent for me.
