    Hey guys,

I've been considering a doctorate degree to teach criminal justice or homeland security. I'm specifically looking at NCU at this point but I have a question for those in the know...

Is there an increasing demand for qualified Homeland Security instructors?

Is the demand anything near that of Criminal Justice?

    Thanks in advance.

My personal opinion (and it's just that - opinion) is that Homeland Security is a shooting star which is on the downward slide. It became the hot commodity after 9/11 but I see it already starting to die down.

It will always be around but I don't see it gaining any more prominence than it has right now, unless God forbid there is another large-scale terrorist attack within the United States.

OTOH, CJ will always be a hot item as long as there is crime, which is to say forever.

I agree with Bruce. If you were to focus on HS AND Emergency Management you would have better career prospects IMO.

Well I like the Criminal Justice emphasis in the PhD or DBA at NCU, I also dig Homeland Security: Policy and Leadership and the Business, Corporate and Campus Security specializations.

Because of my job I've become something of a quasi-expert (or at least knowledgeable enough to be dangerous) in security as it applies to law enforcement. So a dissertation topic would probably come pretty naturally to me. But then I really enjoy the study of Criminal Justice...so...I'm looking at getting a CAGS in Criminal Justice then applying it towards the doctorate as a specialization. I am leaving the Criminal Justice profession however and the Security specialization would probably be of more corporate use, but the whole point of a doctorate is to teach in my opinion.

Yes....IMO (and once again, it's just my opinion) Emergency Management is right now a much more viable and valuable field of study in the long run. EM was on the scene long before 9/11, and will (IMO) be there long after Homeland Security has become officially "non-sexy". :D

Once again in my opinion; both EM and HS will eventually be swallowed by Criminal Justice as a major academic field of study. It will probably take several years, but I do think both EM and HS will eventually become a specialization within CJ.

I would hope that EM can maintain its independence from the influence of the CJ field. If you look at the negative impacts to FEMA as a result of being absorbed into the LE-oriented DHS, it is clear that it should remain a separate field within the social sciences. Public administration is a good home for EM because of the multi-jurisdictional considerations and interdisciplinary aspects experienced by practioners of both fields.

It kind of seems to me that cj, homeland security, emergency managemet and public administration is sort of combining into a new entity sort of speak. From my perspective, the field is ever changing, we need to stay tuned.
