Hi all. Now this is an odd question but here goes. This is my situation. I just completed my first online teaching contract at Florida Tech. So far, both parties are pleased. I'm looking at doing this over the long term (teaching online). Now I understand that a ph.d from a b&m school is more preferrable. But if I'm only interested in adjuncting online (one class here and there) and continue with my LE career would an online doctoral degree or even an Ed.S. be considered okay? It's so competitive trying to get into the ph.d program at my local university and programs and schools are extremely limited. I live in Hawaii so you basically only have the University of Hawaii system, Argosy HI, or online. In short, my career is important so I want to continue that but I like the idea of teaching online (not on a full time basis though).

What area of teaching do you plan to do? Perhaps one of the many foreign doctorates might work for you?

I currently teach criminal justice online. I have strongly considered NCU as an alternate. The tuition at Argosy is outrageous. I'm in the national guard so there is a cap on tuition assistance.

If you decide to go with NCU they give a law enforcement discount that makes the tuition very reasonable.

    Hi,
Argosy if you go there and take classes online they will force you to go to a residency (this will increase your expenses about 6K more per residency) to Chicago, Illinois before you take the 5 class, and that is not negotiable (taking residency near a local campus etc... is not an option) with them in any way.

You must be enrolled in every term if not, they will drop you and do the same if you do not go to the residency when they schedule it. So, if you do decide to go, it will be better to do it at your local campus. There is not break time and they do not allow them. They want to make sure you are spending money all the time. And if you can afford it then is fine, I would said I can cost you about 50K to 70k by the time your done.

I left NCU because I was not able to afford the tuition despite it was very reasonable since they did not participated in Title IV (well they did for a very short time) and some other issues they had(they have fix most). I guess it was meant to be(NCU thing), I came back to NCU took the LE discount, came up with some money paid in full and lock the rate and as a bonus they came up with the specialization of my preference (accounting). That was a sweet deal and save a bunch of money(so I hope). :D

Hope this help a bit. Best of luck.

Vini, thanks so much for your insight on Argosy. I heard the same things about them from other folks. Some of my friends said that while the on campus program is good, the amount you pay is not. You would think the amount of money you spent you would receive a medical degree. Again, residential programs were okay (from what I heard anyway) but they make sure that they get their "cut" in terms of moneywise.

I like the fact that NCU is one of the few that offers military members affordable tuition rates even for graduate programs. Right now cost is a factor.
