    Hello Everybody,

My friend is looking for an online degree in Business Administration at Bachelor level with the top tier one school. He started a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with Park University online, and he is half way there. He is still in the Marine Corps active duty, and currently touring Embassy duty in Cairo, Egypt. He started the program in Psychology because that what he wanted to study, but didn't have a plan what to do with it. One point he intended to go to the Marine Corps Officer route. However, lately he doesn't really want to consider the Marine Corps career path. He also met with other people at the Embassy in China, and they discussed about the Psychology degree in civilian sector. Therefore, he is considering to transfer to the top teir one school for business. He wants to continue education eventually lead him to be a college Professor.

I have in mind for him for the following schools that offer online Bachelor degree in Business.

    University of Florida

    University of Massachusetts at Amherst

    Penn State University
    http://www.worldcampus.psu.edu/BachelorinBusiness.shtml

    Kansas State University
    http://www.dce.ksu.edu/courses/bachelorsdegree/generalbusiness/

If you have any experience with any of these schools or know other tier one school, please give me some advice such as pro and con.

He still uses tuition assistance, and the lowest tuition as possible. BTW, he still has another 2 years in Embassy tour duty.

Thank you very much, and really appreciate for everyone's input.

If your fellow Marine is on embassy duty and not within a reasonable distance of a UF test center in FL, then scratch that option.

Note to Non-Florida Residents: Non-Florida students are welcome in the Online Business Program, but they will need to make travel arrangements to an established Florida test site up to four times per term per course to take exams. The program currently offers no test sites outside of Florida.

Perhaps consider adding University of Wyoming and University of Alabama BS in Commerce and Business Administration to your list.

I'll second FLA Expat's nomination of the University of Wyoming. It's not strictly a tier 1 university per se, but the name is well-known and respected, their experience with distance learning dates back to the nineteenth century, the professors are comfortable with online learning, and thanks to the state's oil and gas boom, tuition and fees are dirt cheap. You also won't meet a more friendly set of administrators than the staff at the Outreach School. I had a great experience earning my degree from UW, and I'm proud to call the school my alma mater.

    Go Pokes!

My advice is always to study what you are passionate about. Life is too short to do otherwise. With that said, Penn State no offers an online BS in Psychology with a business option. This might be the best of both worlds for your friend. More info may be found here: http://www.worldcampus.psu.edu/BachelorinPsychology_Curriculum-BS.shtml.

Essentially, this would be a BS in Psychology with a Minor in Business.

While expensive, Drexel University offers another option for your friend. Drexel offers online BS degrees in both Psychology and General Studies w/ a minor in Business.

    Gents,

Thanks for the replies. The University of Alabama and University of Wyoming are excellent schools. Especially the actraction of low tuition of UWy. I'll send him the information about these school. He is from Oakland, California...and he plans for MBA program at Standford University or Georgetown University. So, good name school would help him with the admission later.

The New School also has a general studies program with a business option. It's a more progressive school but well recognized.

University of Illinois, Springfield is a tier one school and tuition is around $250 per 3 credit course and they do offer an online BBA program.

Also Indiana State University offers an online BBA program and tuition is the same as Univ of Illinois but I am not sure if they are a tier one school.

It is important to keep in mind the business degree issued by the Penn State World Campus is NOT the business degree issued by their flagship campus. Most people outside Pennsylvania probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but this is not a Tier 1 degree.

Does it really say, "WORLD CAMPUS" on the degree certificate and/or transcript?

Fortunato won't brag about this - but notice where his Masters Degree is from. Duke b-school is a top 10 school. The UW business degree IMHO, would serve anyone well.

No it does not. However, the degree remains different. Business degrees from the flagship University Park campus are issued by the Smeal College of Business. World Campus degrees are not.

It's not any sort of a problem for me but I don't think that any of the schools mentioned in this thread so far are actually tier one schools. That term, "tier one" is not rigidly defined and will vary from one evaluator to the next but if any of the schools listed so far have been judged to be "tier one" by anyone, anywhere, then I'd really like to see the listing.

Here is a link to Univ of Illinois, Springfield ranked as Tier one by US news:

The US News ranking is so far and away the authority on this subject it's a bit ridiculous. No other judgment of schools in the US is taken half as seriously. So I think it makes perfect sense for people to be posting schools classified as Tier 1 in US News.

Considering the prestige the term "Tier 1" carries, I must admit I'm a little lost regarding it's meaning. What exactly makes a university "Tier 1" in the first place? A subjective ranking in a publication? A thorough review by an organization? Just curious.
