I'm beginning to realize that I'm somewhat indecisive but hey, since it's my money, I might as well be :)

I'm about 90% done my major at FHSU in "Information Networking and Telecommunications", and have added a 2nd major of Org Leadership. But I ask myself...should I perhaps drop the 2nd major, finish the original degree and then pursue a Masters in Leadership?

What are the pros/cons of going double major vs going for a masters?

    Thanks for the input :)

I get into this quandary myself. My husband's famous line for me is "go vertical" (in other words- another bachelor degree is just accumulating, not advancing)
Undergrad credits are "low hanging fruit" and very tempting because they are testable, cheaper, and fast. (and maybe easier depending on the grad program you are considering)

A con, is that it can cost as much to earn 33 grad credits as your entire 120 undergrad degree...so 33 more undergrad credits can be very very cheap.

Here is something else to consider- if a job posting asks for a master's degree, you can't say "but I have two bachelor degrees-doesn't that count?" No.
    Now....two masters degrees? Ohhhh temptation......

Are you less than 33% complete towards the second major (organizational leadership)? If yes, then drop the second major and focus on organizational leadership at the graduate level. On the other hand, if you are already past the 50% point with the second major, then you have a more difficult choice.

If a promotion at work is the goal, then the graduate degree will get you there faster, all other things being equal. Are you still thinking about moving into human resources / personnel recruitment?

Let us know what you decide.

Generally, I would agree with your husband's perspective on multiple undergraduate degrees. However, as in my situation I have enough credit hours to earn two bachelor degrees. Sometimes, though a second bachelor degree is useful to backfill or complement your educational credentials while concurrently studying towards a graduate degree.

Absolutely true! It is not uncommon to read employment postings stating "bachelor degree and 5+ years experience OR masters degree and 2 years experience." The graduate degree can be a substitute for experience in some cases.

  5. drop the 2nd major and move forward. I dont think I have to tell you that having a masters will substantially increase your earning potential, way more than a double major which may not increase it at all. PLUS if you are looking for a good leadership program Mountain State has a great accelerated one that I am in now and I am loving it!

I wouldn't bother with the 2nd bachelor's unless you are making a switch in terms of your educational and professional emphases. (Or, as in my case, the 2nd degree is incredibly within reach.)

    Get the master's.

Not counting GenEd credits, I'd need to take 14 courses to get the Org Ldr degree; I need 9 courses to finish my INT degree...

Yes, I still would like to get into HR (though that's at least 2 years away); I am going to take the courses through FHSU to get the HRM certificate (4 courses).

I'm going to take the advice and focus on finishing the INT degree, then going for the HRM cert.. I think you're all correct, going for the Masters in Org Leadership will serve me better than 2 bachelor degrees :)

As usual, thanks for the valuable input!

If it's an either/or choice, go for the master's. If not, go for both.

Since there appear to be many viewers but few posters, I'd like to give the viewers the opportunity to cast their vote without having to add a reply :)

Even though there are compelling reasons already, I still like to include everyone :D

It's either/or... I really want to pursue the Org Leadership in order to (hopefully) progress my career, and I think that the Master's will do that much moreso than 2 Bach's....

..of course, if time/money weren't an issue.. I'd do both :)

But I agree with everyone.. I'll finish the B.S. (should grad next summer) and then pursue a Cert in HRM, followed by the Master's :)

    Thanks everyone!

Your earning potential will increase more with a Masters than a Bachelors.
