Do Ph.D. graduates usually continue to do research? Do D/L Ph.D.s ever publish their results?

    Nosborne asks:

Do Ph.D. graduates usually continue to do research?

Depends, of course, where they end up. One way universities are categorized (the Carnegie Classifications) is whether they are "research universities" or not. In some places, there is much more emphasis on research; in other places, on teaching. In the corporate world, depends, of course, on the job. We actually had a job applicant 5 or 6 years ago with a Cornell Ph.D., current academic job, driving a schoolbus.

Do D/L Ph.D.s ever publish their results?

There has been controversy over the matter of University Microfilms/Dissertation Abstracts acceptance (= publication) of non-regionally-accredited degrees. Generally they don't but there have been exceptions. As long as the school is RA, they will. And the publishing world doesn't worry about RA, but only quality and/or marketability. For instance, one of the earliest PhD graduates of Columbia Pacific turned his PhD dissertation into what was, at the time, a very successful and well-reviewed textbook in hospital management.

John Bear (who finally got around to turning my
PhD dissertation into a book decades later, now
called "Send This Jerk the Bedbug Letter: how
corporations, politicians, and the media deal
    with consumer complaints...)

  3. Interesting question...

Once upon a time (1983) I did a thesis on capital justification with companion software development. I could find nobody interested in publishing my work.

Later in life (1992) I did an expert system development for Electrical Utility application. It was my employers Power House so they owned the rights to publishing. It never did get published ... proriotary info you know :)

I am currently working on a dissertation concerning behavioral finance for small business applications. When it is finished, it will be copyrighted but not published. It will be for my use in my consultant practice.

I agree with the good Dr. Bear ... it depends.

    Regards,

    Dick
