Ten universities join information assurance program
    Dan KaplanMay 15 2008
The National Security Agency (NSA) on Thursday announced that 10 new colleges have been designated National Centers of Academic Excellence in information assurance.

The 10 schools will join 83 others across 37 states and Washington, D.C. that are part of the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education Program. Members must be recertified every five years.

The new designations are California State University, San Bernardino; Georgetown University; Southern Polytechnic State University; University of Tennessee, Chattanooga; University of Arkansas, Little Rock; University of Denver; University of Missouri, Columbia; University of Nevada, Las Vegas; West Chester University and West Virginia University, according to the NSA, which was joined by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in the announcement.

To achieve designation, schools must prove they adhere to 10 criteria, which includes having implemented academic programs encouraging research in information assurance, and employed full-time faculty, the NSA said. Once they are designated, universities are eligible to apply for federal scholarships and grants to fund their course offerings.

The purpose of the program is to promote higher education in academia so graduates can help reduce the number of vulnerabilities in the nation's critical infrastructure, according to the NSA.

I didn't know that Georgetown University offers Information Assurance. That sounds interesting. I want to go to the route if they offer the program, and Columbia University is not bad at all.

I believe University of Denver's newly designated Information Systems Security program is offered completely online. DU offers a related grad certificate as well.

Incidentally, Park University is reportedly working on NSA designation for their online-only, grad certificate in Computer and Network Security.

I think that is "University of Missouri, Columbia", instead of "Columbia University", right?

    From USNews.com Top National Universities:
Tied with 4 others at #85.

    From NCAA DI championships website:
    Denver *

    Total NCAA Team Championships: 25
    men's championships: 7
    women's championships: 0
    coed championships: 18

    Breakdown by Sport:
    men's ice hockey: 7
    coed skiing: 18

The controversial list and face time for less popular NCAA sports notwithstanding, DU, a private school, is undoubtedly expensive. Comparatively speaking, I pay over $1,700 per course through the University of Dallas, which is roughly what DU charges. DU is also on a quarter hour system. Most, if not all grad courses there are 4 credit hours.

Additionally, the DU IA program has received courseware certification only for CNSS No. 4011 and 4012. This may not matter to some students, but others may have concerns.

Oopss, my bad. I had thought about University of Denver's program MAS in Telecom (Security or IA). However, I don't like the title Master of Applied Science instead of Master of Science.
