    Hello Everyone,

Hope everyone have a great Memorial weekend while I am working. Anyway, I just want to know if anybody in here has experience in the Ph.D degree. What are the differences between Ph.D and DSc (i.e Ph.D in Computer Engineering and Doctoral of Science in Computer Engineering). Secondly, is that possible to start a Ph.D or PD at one institution and finish at another? For example, I intend to go to Columbia University for Ph.D degree after I am done with my master at the George Washington University. However, I intend to complete my master degree in Spring 2010, but I am not ready to move to New York yet. Besides, I want to stay at my job longer than 2 years.

Thank you very much, and really appreciate your help. BTW, for those want to know about my Officer Candidate School at Quantico, Virginia. I didn't make it, and was kicked out 3 weeks before graduation for failing the Leadership Reaction Course 2 (LRC 2). Well, 6 years in the Marine Corps are enough.

Northcentral University provides a description of the distinctions between a Ph.D. and a DBA. However, the distinctions are generic enough to apply to other doctoral degrees.

I am sorry to hear the news knowing how much effort you put into process. With your background there are probably many opportunities awaiting you outside the USMC.

The supposed difference is that the PhD involves theoretical research while the DSc involves applied research (though I'm not sure whether those distinctions are always maintained in practice).

That might be a difficult sell.

I am so not sure on this, but don't universities have a problem with you being in two (I know you are not TEKMAN, I am just asking) doctoral programs at the same time. The reason I asked is that when I took my one course at NCU, they were not pleased I was at UH at the same time.

As Ted notes, generalizing is difficult to do. While some schools treat non-Ph.D. doctorates as applied, that isn't always the case. In many situations, the requirements for the DSc, EdD, etc., are the same as for the Ph.D.

It is better to look at the specific degrees you're interested in and its requirements, rather than rely on loosely applied generalizations.

    Sorry to hear this, Tekman.

Good to see you're moving on. I'm sure you will do well in other endeavors. You certainly have the right attitude.

    Good luck!

The difference between a Ph.D and DSc is that you will never have to explain the meaning of your Ph.D. degree to anyone

I too went through OCS and it was a difficult and unsavory experience. We started with 58 officer candidates and we were treated like !@#$%^&*. Only 17 of us were commissioned. I hated the experience, even though I graduated! Ultimately, I was glad to go in the military, but I was equally glad to get out!!!

Thanks for your six years of service.

    TEKMAN,

Wow, to make it as far as you did, 3 weeks before the end, is an achievement that is well deserving of PRAISE and ADMIRATION. I watched a documentary on OCS training on television a few years back. Whew, the guys were treated like s*#t, but I can see how it helps build leadership skills under extreme mental and physcial stress. I admire your dedication. THANK YOU for YOUR SERVICE to our country. And best wishes for in your education.

    Salute!

I would like to revise my previous answer. If by "start a PhD at one institution and finish at another," you mean do the coursework phase at School #1 and then write the dissertation at School #2, that is what I meant would be a difficult sell. Such things do happen occasionally, or so I'm told, but only when the student goes so far beyond the original advisor's interest/expertise and the original advisor knows of a professor elsewhere who would be a more appropriateadvisor for the student. However if by "start a PhD at one institution and finish at another," you mean get an MS at George Washington University and a PhD at Columbia University, I'm not sure why that would pose a problem.

Thanks everybody for the replies. I really appreciate for the definition of Ph.D and DSc. I found out it is really hard to start a Ph.D program from X school and complete the degree at Y school. Therefore, I'll find out the solution once I am done with my Master. Well, OCS was tough...but I went to the Marine Corps Boot Camp. So, it wasn't that bad because I had some experience with @ss chewing. I didn't like the PEERS REVIEW, it was like The Weakest Link T.V show. :D

    Randell,

Thanks for asking. I got my job back with the United States Army at Fort Belvoir as a Network Engineer (Civilian Contractor). As the same time attending at the George Washington University to complete my Master. I am working on a package to get back to the United States Marine Corps Selected Reserve in the Intelligence field. My goal to attend Columbia University for Ph.D program, but I might start with their Professional Degree via CVN program.
