    Post NY Times article

Tomorrow's (Nov 11) NY Times has an article entitled Cyberclasses in Session in the Education Life section. Discusses quite a number of programs, including Univ. of Phoenix, Colorado State , Concord Law School , RIT.
I don't see the article on their website, but perhaps will be posted tomorrow.

    Lightbulb

When my computer broke, I had to withdraw from my second class at the University of Phoenix (online). It was a blessing in disguise because:

    1. It's way too expensive.

    2. I was always ashamed to tell people that I was enrolled in UoP because I felt like it was a scam (even though it is RA).

It would be interesting to know why you considered it a scam.

I attended a professional seminar that involved a lot of writing. One of the classmates had a masters degree in organizational management , so I expected his writing skill to be halfway decent. However, he cudn't even rite very gud (or is dat well???). That experience was always in the back of my mind and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Then when I found out how expensive the classes were: Whew!!! (He must have bought his degree?).

I am not going to say that the University of Phoenix is a scam. However, I am very uncomfortable with that school. I have grave concerns about the longevity of that school's reputation. Something just doesn't seem right.

I'm not here to bash that school, but that's just how I feel.

Excellent article. Thanks for commending it to our attention. I recommend as well the article on financial aid for distance learning students mentioned in the sidebar.

It would behoove everyone to write to his/her senators in support of the bill mentioned. One road to respectiblity for distance learning degrees is to be taken seriously on the money front. If the government says a degree earned through distance learning is important enough to qualify for financing through outright grants and scholarships, it would be a strong bargaining chip down the road for many with degrees so earned.
