Anyone here have advice on graduate level GIS certifcates? I am interested in completing 18 hours of geography courses to add more diversity to my community college opportunities. What are some of the best programs? My local community college suggested I take world regional geography type courses in order to teach the geography courses they offer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Penn State offers a post-baccalaureate certificate in geographic information systems. University of North Dakota offers a graduate certificate in geographic information science via distance education. University of Southern California offers a graduate certificate in geographic information science and technology via distance education.
http://www.ce.emich.edu/gis/ Eastern Michigan University offers a fully online graduate certificate in GIS for educators. http://jsuonline.com/degree/index.php?degid=14 Jacksonville State University offers a Graduate Certificate in Spatial Analysis and Management
University of Denver, University College offers an online advanced graduate certificate in GIS: http://universitycollege.du.edu/grad/gis/index.cfm
GIS courses would not fulfill this requirement then. You would need graduate courses in areas such as Human or Physical Geography.
The only non-GIS geography courses I have found at the graduate level were mainly for secondary school teachers. They are: http://geoconnects.pwnet.org/ and http://geography.unco.edu/certificate.htm
I have seen both of those programs. I find it amazing that there are no DL graduate level courses in geography outside of GIS.
The University of Texas, San Marcos still lists a Master of Applied Geography as a distance learning program. http://www.geo.txstate.edu/programs/grad/mag/index.html http://www.studyanywhere.txstate.edu/edl_program_offerings
That's Texas State University at San Marcos. I recommend contacting the TX State Geography department. Although the program is listed as a distance learning option, no graduate geography courses appear on CatsWeb that are delivered in such a format. When I attended Texas State, an undergrad GIS certificate was available through correspondence; I considered the program at one time. But even that option is no longer listed. Yet, the graduate catalog also mentions the MAG as available through DL. Definitely check with the geography folks. Bobcat land has a notorious reputation for outdated webpages.
Perhaps the Arizona State University -- Master of Advanced Study program in Geographic Education, fits your requirements? · No GRE or other admission testing; easy course registration · All required courses offered online to accommodate busy schedules · An affordable Master’s Degree in 12 to 18 months Tuition appears reasonable for non-residents.
There is now a "GIS for Dummies" book, out in February 2009 http://www.amazon.com/GIS-Dummies-Computer-Tech/dp/0470236825 From my look atr it at B&N, as a reviewer says, it isn't really for dummies - more like the novice student. There is lots of technical material. The text said it is geared for the non-expert to be abel to employ and interface with the expert in GIS intelligently. I should also think is well-serves the prospective GIS cert or degree student to familiarize themselves with the field. "GIS is cartography on steroids."
Hello, I have been lurking here for more than a year, but since I've been searching for GIS graduate level courses myself for some time now, I thought I could help. Lund University, Sweden, offers a Master's degree in GIS through distance learning. It is also possible to register for individual courses and then apply later for admission into the Master's program. I am currently enrolled for the GISA01 (GIS401) "GIS; an introduction" course starting October. Unfortunately I think it's too late to apply for this year. If you decide to apply for next year, higher education in Sweden is currently free, including international students. One somewhat confusing thing is that while the course I am taking is a part of requirements for a Master's degree, they classify it as "Basic Level" - I am not really sure what that means. Anyway, this is the link: http://luma.gis.lu.se/ For other, non-GIS, geography courses, I am not sure if this could help (it is technically undergraduate) but University of London External System offers Diploma for Graduates (4 courses) in Geography and Environment (as well as a BSc). http://www.londonexternal.ac.uk/prospective_students/undergraduate/lse/dip_grad/geography/index.shtml
