I was wondering what people think of the University of Baltimore and Auburn University distance MBA prorams?

Regarding Baltimore, is the degree respected? Is it only geared toward the high tech industry?

Auburn, how is this program seen by others? Will a degree from either of these institutions help me learn to manage a group physician practice or take a job as a physician executive perhaps as a hospital director?

    Any comments would be appreciate.

As a medical malpractice consultant in the Seattle area, I work with a great many physician executives, most of whom have no formal business training whatsoever.

There is ongoing debate in the healthcare field as which degree offers the best preparation for a medical administration career: MBA or MHA. Each has its defenders and its detractors. Certainly, a MBA offers opportunities other than in the healthcare field, while a MHA offers some specialized courses specific to healthcare, which may be an advantage if one's future career will only consider healthcare options.

In the ambulatory practice setting, a MBA and MHA are usually considered interchangeable while in the inpatient setting, a MHA is usually preferred.

Possibly the best advice is if you already know what city you want to work in, look into MHA programs (if you want to work in a hospital) or MBA programs (if you want to work in ambulatory care or other options) provided in that city. That will give you the best networking opportunities to help you find a job.

Choice of institution becomes increasingly less important as one accumulates years of experience or moves further away from that institution. As an example, in Seattle, almost no one has heard of or has an opinon as to U. Baltimore or Auburn, unless they are from that area.

    Regards,

I agree with Mr. Lloyd that the reputation of the school (as long as it is one with recognized accreditation) is less important than many other factors. In our book "Bears' Guide to the Best MBAs by Distance Learning," we identify eleven other factors seriously to consider in making a school choice. That chapter is available without charge on the publisher's web site:
