Hello all. Just wondering if anyone knows of any graduate (preferably doctorate) level courses in political science related courses online? As expected, I was passed over for admission to my local university's ph.d program in political science. I'm thinking of taking a course or two online and trying again next term and maybe transfer a credit or two.
I don't know of any doctoral courses in political science online. There are doctoral programs in political science available by dissertation only through London South Bank University www.lsbu.ac.uk , the University of Luton www.luton.ac.uk , and the University of Melbourne www.unimelb.edu.au . There are master's courses and programs in political science available online through American Military University www.apus.edu , Governors State University www.govst.edu , Harvard Extension School www.extension.harvard.edu , Syracuse University www.syr.edu , Virginia State University and Polytechnic Institute www.vt.edu , and Western New Mexico University www.wnmu.edu .
Salve Regina University will allow you to take single graduate courses. They offer a bunch of political science courses at the masters level, however they fall under the international relations department (INR prefix). Some are self paced courses, some are interactive. http://www.salve.edu/graduatestudies/programs/intrel/curriculum.cfm http://www.salve.edu/programs_Esalve/InteractiveCourses.htm http://www.salve.edu/programs_Esalve/Self-pacedCourses.htm

Gosh! I forgot about the MA in Government at Regent University www.regent.edu . You could also see if any of these programs offer a Graduate Certificate.
Another thi\ought just occurred to me. Since most graduate programs will transfer up to nine hours, and since public administration is a subdiscipline of political science, one might see about taking nine hours of doctoral level public administration classes at someplace like Capella University www.capella.edu , Northcentral University www.ncu.edu , Nova Southeastern University www.nova.edu , or Walden University www.waldenu.edu and then transferring them into your local B&M doctoral program.
Add Valdosta State University www.valdosta.edu to your list of online doctorates in public administration.
It looks like we can strike Capella and Nova from the list of online doctorates in public administration.
Virginia Tech does offer Graduate Certificates in Environmental Policy and Politics, Information Policy and Society, Foundations of Political Analysis, and Security Studies.
Yup, Regent offers the Certificate of Graduate Studies in (and concentrations for their MA in Government in) Public Administration, Political Management, International Politics, Mid-East Politics, Terrorism and Homeland Defense, and Law and Public Policy.
If you are looking for public admin. credits I would recommend you go to the National Association of Schools in Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) and search from there - www.naspaa.org. NASPAA is the PA accrediting body similar to AASCB for business.
Per the NASPAA site: The Commission on Peer Review and Accreditation is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as a specialized accrediting agency and authorized to accredit masters degree programs in public affairs and administration. In 1977, member institutions of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) voted to adopt a program of voluntary peer review evaluation of masters degrees or degree programs in public affairs and administration. That same year, the association adopted Standards for Professional Masters Degree Programs in Public Affairs, Policy and Administration. Peer review was initiated by the member institutions to facilitate the continuing development and quality of public service education. The reason I chose Valdosta State is that it is a NASPAA accredited school for their MPA program, which is at least a benchmark in the field of PA. Many of the PA faculty job announcements I have seen lately have specified NASPAA degrees, similar to trends fro AASCB in business.
NASPAA does not accredit Doctoral programs, but schools that have met the NASPAA threshhold for the Masters are considered "above" schools that have not, similar to AASCB for business. That is the reason I left NCU and chose Valdosta State - many of the PA faculty job announcements for upper tier schools that I have seen lately have specified NASPAA degrees. I have searched previously for Doctoral courses from NASPAA schools offered at a distance and was unable to find anything that was offered that did not require formal admission to the school's Doctoral program.
