Well I spoke to someone with the Homeland Security office in Guam today and she said that there will be a press conference tommorrow in regards to the new Associates degree in Emergency Management offered through Guam Community College. Here is the thread where it was mentioned. http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?t=27680 She thinks that if you completed most of the courses through FEMA and have your general education requirements you would only have to take a few online courses through GCC in order to obtain the Associates. She did mention that you may have to actually go to Guam for a few courses. I mentioned that I'm in Louisiana which would make that pretty difficult. Her response was that this issue has been addressed and what they will probably end up doing is having an online format available for these courses. She said there would be a flat fee for transfer on the FEMA credits for those of you interested in getting them transcripted. GCC is regionally accredited through the WASC http://www.wascweb.org/

My plan would be to finish this degree rather quickly since I've taken 25 of the FEMA courses already and use the degree towards my degree at MSU or even possibly LSU. Do you think this is even possible? Either way it sounds like a good plan to grab an associates degree quickly and at a really discounted cost. I'll update this when I get some more information.

Well guys I already have some info from GCC. Here is the flyer they gave out at todays press conference. I spoke to the same person as earlier and she said the president of the college and their shareholders were shocked that people in the states might be interested in the degree or getting the courses transcripted. Anyway here is the flyer. I'm about to go read through it myself to see how many of the FEMA courses I have. Who knows.....even if it isn't worthwhile for you to utilize the transcripts maybe you could convince someone who just wants a degree to take the FEMA courses and get this degree. :)

*NOTE* The server won't let me upload the file. It is 508k and it says it's too large. Bruce if you want I can email it to you and you can post it here. Or anyone here that wants it send me a PM and I'll email it to you.

They have shareholders? I thought they were the public college for the Territory of Guam?

I'd think that many emergency management types would be working for the feds, and as such Frederick Community College would probably be more familiar since it's not that far outside D.C., but Guam Community College is certainly just as well accredited.

Feel free to email it to me and I'll put it up on my site for anyone who wants it.

These are the 2 people in the article it says to call.

    WHOM TO CALL
Call Jose Munoz at (671) 735-5570 or e-mail [email protected], or Lesley Leon Guerrero, Guam Homeland Security public affairs officer, at (671)687-9109.

I'm sure one of these two can answer the question. It's currently 8:30am in Guam right now (5:30pm Central Time).

I was aware of Clackamaus Community College. The reason I don't talk about them much is because:

    a) Excelsior's literature used to state that FEMA credits transcripted at FCC or CCC would be accepted. They have since removed the reference to CCC.

    b) FEMA used to reference both FCC and CCC on its independent study website. They also have dropped the CCC reference. Any college has the right to transcript the credits, but since the official FEMA/EMI site references only FCC, most other institutions seem to demand a FCC transcript.

    c) CCC requires an official transcript from FEMA and copies of the certifications. FEMA stopped issuing official certifications for completed courses back in 2006. They now send a link via email to a PDF version of the certification. I question whether these certifications will be accepted since they are not official.

I would NEVER try to talk someone out of transcripting FEMA courses at CCC, the savings is worth the attempt, but I would make EXTRA CERTAIN that the college to which you intend on transferring the credit will accept the transcriptions from CCC. I believe there are some schools out there that will still accept the FEMA credit directly, at least on a case by case basis. We all know this to be the case with TESC, Mountain State might (we are waiting for an update elsewhere on this board), Guam Community College ($30 flat fee to record all credits), and Bellevue recently accepted my FEMA credit.

You can still get your FEMA IS transcript from the EMI.

I would add the following to your list:

    d) CCC uses the quarter credit system, meaning that they will award only 1 quarter credit for most of the FEMA courses. That translates to just 0.67 semester hours.

FYI, for anyone that is curious about having Guam CC transcribe the FEMA courses, I called and talked to Mr. Jose Munoz and asked him if it was possible to have the FEMA courses transcribed at Guam CC and he didn't have the answer to that question so he asked me to send him an e-mail.

    This was his reply:

    Hafa Adai,
Thank you for inquiring about our new Emergency Management program.
We do not offer transcripts for FEMA courses. We use FEMA's Emergency
Management Institute's courses to augment our program. Successful
completion of some of these courses and other Guam Community College
courses will earn a student either an Associate's degree or a
    Certificate in Emergency Management.

If I can be of furthur assistance please let me know.
