Capella University’s accreditation is reaffirmed by The Higher Learning Commission (HLC)

The online university's accreditation was reaffirmed through the AQIP process without any stipulations

MINNEAPOLIS, March 10, 2008 - The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) has reaffirmed Capella University's accreditation without any stipulations on its affiliation status. Capella (www.capella.edu) is an accredited* online university based in Minneapolis.

The HLC is an independent corporation and one of two commission members of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), which was founded in 1895 as one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States. The Higher Learning Commission accredits, and thereby grants membership in the commission and in the NCA, to degree-granting educational institutions in the north central region of the United States. The HLC is recognized by the US Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Capella's accreditation was reaffirmed through the HLC's Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP), which infuses the principles and benefits of continuous improvement into the culture of colleges and universities by providing an alternative process through which an already-accredited institution can maintain its accreditation. Instead of the traditional 10-year review cycle, AQIP participants adhere to an ongoing annual review regimen. By participating in AQIP, Capella is required to analyze its operational processes and measure outcomes within each of nine different quality categories, and to set ambitious performance goals, such as converting all its courses to an outcomes/competency-based model.

In 2000, Capella became the first online university to become a charter participant of AQIP, and committed to a program of continuous quality improvement (CQI) similar to initiatives practiced in other industries. The university first received accreditation in 1997.

“This is a significant accomplishment and Capella University is proud to be one of the first institutions to have joined and successfully completed the entire accreditation cycle with the AQIP program. The program's focus on continuous quality improvement has been a natural fit for Capella,” said Dr. Michael Offerman, vice chairman of external university initiatives and former Capella University president.

Capella's next scheduled accreditation reaffirmation process will be during the 2014–2015 academic year.

    Ya think ...

But if the creator had spent a fraction of the time invested in making this video in his studies (and lawsuit) he might have actually succeeded at either?

Love how ratings and comments were both disabled for the video!
    A cowardly hit-and-run!

Thanks for sharing the good news. I have my undergraduate degree from Capella, and so I was following this. What a world of difference between Capella and NCU, the school I am attending now. NCU received a recommendation for only a 3 year reaffirmation. Today, I was on the student blog and saw this announcement.

    !!!WARNING!!!
Please do not pay attention to the posting entitled "US Department of Education Does NOT recognize NCU!". The posting asserts some erroneous information. Although later postings debunk the initial assertions, the posting is causing unwarranted anxiety and should be deleted. Thanks to those who took the time to get to the truth and report it accurately. WELL DONE! - Timothy Brown - [3/13/2008]

Makes you wonder about their stability if people are freaking out.

"US Department of Education Does NOT recognize NCU!
I knew walking into NCU that they did not participate in Title IV Federal Funding. However, what I did not know is that NCU is not on the National Student Clearinghouse so that I could gain an in-school deferment for student loans."

    - It is very easy to submit a deferment request. The documents can be faxed, mailed, or submitted online.

"So, sorry to say that I am leaving NCU and although I think the NCU format is the best, I cannot stay here because the US Department of Education does NOT recognize NCU, even though it is an accredited school. "

    - The US Department of Education recognizes the organization that accredits NCU. There is no need to leave! NCU's learning management system is the best according to your perception.

"The worst part about the whole experience for me is that I asked these questions up front and was told that I could place my loans for in-school deferment due to the fact that it was an accredited school recognized by the US Dept of Education. "

    - This is correct in essence.

"The truth is: The accreditation is recognized, not the school itself. This may present problems for leaner's when they are done and are trying to find high level jobs or academic positions. If the college or university you apply to finds out that NCU is not recognized, you may not be considered. - Bill Thompson - [3/11/2008]"

    - Complete Rubbish

I don't believe it's a good idea for the creator of the video to keep adding to the laundry list of items that Capella is going to present in the upcoming lawsuit...

What is your source of information? Will you please provide it? Did you get your information from the regional accreditor or from a random blog site or are you simply speculating? Pray tell? :)

As a result of your statement, I decided to go directly to the regional accreditor and found the following from their website:

    The NCAHLC site hasn't listed March yet on their "Recent Actions" section, but have NCU listed as having a "Focused Evaluation - Commission Mandated" in February;

Someone I know quite well, not me, is a current student at NCU in one of their Ph.D. programmes and has obtained very high-level contract positions within two organizations.

NCU is RA and therefore recognized. However, any school is free to exclude applicants for teaching positions on almost whatever basis that school chooses.

NCA places a school that falls short of accreditation standards “on notice”. SCAS places such schools on “warning” or “probation”.

In view of the fact that NCA doesn’t have warning or probation status, isn’t mandated focused evaluation the equivalence of SACS probation?

Perhaps “on notice” is equivalent to warning.

NCA = North Central Association (Higher Learning Commission)
SACA = Southern association of Colleges and Schools (Commission on Colleges)

According to section 7.3-2 of their handbook:
So probation would be the same as SCAS it seems.
