    Hello, all.

A friend of mine, who is pursuing a degree at Charter Oak State College, asked me a question that I cannot answer. Here goes...

There are several six-hour CLEP tests available (College Mathematics, Humanities, Social Sciences and History, for example). According to the COSC website, six hours may be granted with a score of 50 or higher. Here's the crux of the issue: What if a test taker makes below 50...is there a possibility of getting three hours, instead of six? Or is it six or nothing at all? Is there a "sliding scale" whereby hours could be earned if someone scored below a 50?

I'm not sure, your friend should ask their counselor. I have a BSc. from COSC and I remember in the process taking one of the six hour CLEPs and I passed with the required percentile rank for the six, BUT, the degree requirement was for 6 hours and I had a 3 hour B & M Physics Course on transcript that they had recognised as partially meeting the COSC requirement, so COSC only gave me 3 hours, not 6 on the COSC transcript.

If I remember correctly you have to make that percentile and if you do you get the credit, if you don't then you get zip.

I share this to explain the circumstance under which I am sure of where they will give partial credit for a 6 hour CLEP. I don't think if you don't make the minimum percentile they will grant any.

But I found my counselor to be excellent at explaining their policies and generous with advice on how to achieve the desired goals so I would suggest that they just ask.

My experience with COSC was nothing but positive.

While only your friend's academic advisor there can say for sure, I'd be absolutely astonished if they do anything other than follow the ACE evaluations, which would be six or nothing.

The only "sliding scale" ones are the foreign language ones, because the ACE evaluations account for two tiers of success. Those lead to 0, 6, or 12 credits, depending on how well one does.

Steve is correct, it's pass or fail on all but the language exams.

Also, there can be a situation where part of a 6 hour CLEP duplicates a course you've taken. Some of the sciences can be split that way but it isn't based on the exam score - it depends if you've already taken part of the series as a class. Most schools will give preference to a class over the exam.
