With the recent word on the MIGS fine (and my guess that this will serve as the final death knell for Sheila's latest get-rich-quick scheme) I think that this may be an excellent time to start a special award for individuals who have single-handedly influenced the closing or sanctioning of a less-than-wonderful institution. I nominate Steve for his work on MIGS. Clearly, his calls to the TX and FL authorities, even though ostensibly done to provide evidence for his defense, were crucial in the unfolding of current events. John Bear ought to be nominated for his tireless efforts to nail Columbia State, and I'm sure there are plenty of others he's helped close down. Of course, I guess we then have to define at what point is a school shut down? When they get a huge fine against them? When the owners go into hiding or are locked up? When the web site no longer resolves or doesn't offer degrees (think uncas.net)? Thoughts, comments, nominations appreciated.
I second both nominations. How about we have an "inaugural class", people who have already paid their dues and perhaps have retired (like Steve), then we can nominate those who earn the honor at a later date. Even though I've never met or corresponded with either one, I would also nominate Alan Ezell and Eric Veith. For those who aren't familiar, Ezell was the lead FBI Agent for "DipScam", and Veith was the prosecutor who shut down the accrediting mill ACI. Bruce
Although he is still an active player, our Hawaiian friend Jeffrey Brunton is making big plays and racking up yards faster than Jerry Rice. He looks to me like future Hall of Fame material.
Perhaps another award, the Barney Fife Medal, should go to MIGS based on the number of times they've shot themselves in the foot.
Well, Barney was only allowed to carry one round of ammunition in his shirt pocket, and MIGS has suffered a lot more than one self-inflicted wound. How about the "Kevlar Shoe Award"? Bruce
Actually, it was ACI's predecessor--IAC. I wonder if Mr. Veith is still living? If so, perhaps he could give ACI a little boost into oblivion. Russell
Besides getting ACI/IAC mixed up, I apparently misspelled Mr. Vieth's name. From the MO Bar Association: Vieth, Erich Vincent Bar Number: 29850 Date Admitted: 9/19/1981 St. Louis, MO 63101 United States Current Standing: Good Standing Bruce
If Mr. Vieth is currently in good standing, he is no doubt alive. Perhaps a phone call would whet his appetite for another match with ACI (IAC). Russell
Russell, we should remember that Mr. Vieth was on the Missouri attorney general's staff and that ACI now operates in Arkansas. ------------------ Bill Gossett
Russell, He IS a lawyer so there may be some doubt if he is still alive! it's a billable hours thing.... Dan
