I received an e-mail from GetEducated.com. Part of the e-mail described updates to their top 30 ranked best buys list.

Interesting that Jacksonville State University and the University of South Dakota are both absent. Aren't they both less expensive than most on that list?

I guess cost is not the deciding factor.

If it was Charleston Southern University would be on there.

A few minutes ago, I wrote to Ms. Phillips concerning your question. Based on her answer, one of us should respond here by tomorrow.

East Carolina University is like 40 miles from me and the cost of the program is higher if you do not have a background in a business related subject, then you will have to take some prereqs, which I think is the same at most colleges these days. Plus the course are 16 weeks long in some instances and you are limited to the amount of courses you can take each semester. These are reasons that put me off from attending, but other than that its a fine college. The prereq courses will increase the cost of the degree for both instate and out of state students.

Strange....Peru State College didn't make the list of most affordable bachelor's degrees either. Compared to some of the listings, Peru is dirt cheap.

Steve, Ms. Phillips wrote back with a lengthy (and very interesting) response. She may respond to this thread, especially after reading my potentially horrible paraphrase that follows. :D

GetEducated.com maintains clearly defined guidelines concerning data collection -- a methodology, if you will. Sincere attempts are made to include "every eligible program" in the listings. In this case, GetEducated.com staff invested considerable time as part of an effort focused on obtaining confirmation from Jacksonville State University about its MBA program. JSU, for whatever reasons, apparently failed to respond to these inquiries.

Ranking academic programs represents a time-consuming, expensive process. In other words, while we glance at tuition costs and post our observations here, GetEducated.com seeks to attain a higher level of data integrity by surveying school administrations. Relevant data is then compiled and published on the website.

Because of additional measures taken to ensure information validity, I can certainly agree with this process. Numerous publications cite GetEducated.com in various reports and articles. Throughout the wide open expanses we call the WWW, substantive trust is more akin to gold, in my opinion.

Speaking of University of South Dakota MBA, remember my post? Well, I made a minor mistake about the MBA program. At the time, I was unaware that USD requires the first week in residence. Only later, and after additional review, was this programmatic aspect evident to me. My apologies for not correcting the data, but I will.

There has always been a lot of good information on GetEducated.com site. I like their free PDF guidebooks since you can in one document find information about a lot of distance learning programs.

Most of the other sites such as businessweek.com, newsweek.com, and ft.com do not describe every distance learning MBA program. However, some of these sites include information about programs in Europe and Asia which is useful.
