.I would love to do a PhD in Criminal Justice so I could teach at a four-year university. The problem is there are only a few criminal justice PhD's with a distance-learning format. These degrees aren't really CJ degree's either they are actually CJ specializations. If I am not mistaken a PhD from Capella or Walden will not get me a full time teaching position at a four year university. So my question, does anybody know of a school with a PhD program in CJ that requires minimal amounts of residency. I know I can't expect anything as little as a few months but a school with a year residency is better then a school with a 5-year full time program. Any suggestions would help. Thank you
For whatever reasons, the DL market has yet to come up with a non-resident (or even limited residency) doctorate in criminal justice. The closest are probably Capella & Walden with the main subject (human services) being more appropriate than Northcentral (business). Nova Southeastern University has been planning a limited residency Ph.D. in CJ, but I last wrote to them at least 2 years ago and while they confirmed their plans, nothing is public yet. A call or e-mail to them might be worthwhile.
Ph.D. Criminal Justice I think the best option out there is Northcentral University. They have done alot of work putting a good program together and its affordable compared to Capella and Walden. If you haven't looked at NU lately take another look.
When you say full time, do you mean a tenure track position at a public or non-profit school where you do not already work? -=Steve=-
tenure That's correct. I want a tenure track position. I don't think that a PhD in Business with a concentration in CJ will do the trick. I think that I need a PhD in CJ.
There are none in existence (online), at the time of this writing. However, if you want to go in-resident, there are many options available to you.
Washington State I did some more looking and found Washington State. They are a traditional program but my wife and I have been planning a move to Idaho. Where we are planning to live is only 30 minutes from Washington State. That will be my goal.
Huh. I was going to ask why not consider the University of Idaho, but then I looked and it seems the closest thing they have is a PhD in Political Science. Anyway, I spent a month in Idaho once and found that the place was beautiful and the people were really nice. Enjoy it! -=Steve=-
Just a thought for consideration: I taught for a year at a state university in the CJ department. I was able to do so by virtue of a "JD plus"= a JD plus a Masters in psych, specializing in forensic psych. That said, I asked the same question re distance PhD's. And the members of the faculty selection committee, although lamenting on the dearth of true CJ PhD programs, to a person, said that distance PhD's get the round-file treatment. They'd rather have a JD or a JD-plus. And this was candid conversation. So, if you're serious, go to a residential program.
Nova I checked with Nova and they told me that in the Spring of 2009 they will start a fully online PhD in Criminal Justice. It will not be a specialization in CJ but an actual CJ degree.
That is wonderful, groundbreaking news!! Are you certain it's 100% online? That would be out of character with Nova's doctoral programs, all of which require some type of residency.
PhD CJ I was told that it was "completely online". I did not inquire further. My main concern was if it was a true PhD in CJ and it is.
