In a recent thread ("International University of Professional Studies"), several in this group suggested a number of options for obtaining an MA in Buddhist Studies--or something similar. Unfortunately, most of these do not provide their program through DL.

However, in my travels through the Web in this regard, I did discover what might be an interesting program, currently in formation, and thought I'd pass it along: http://www.sunderland.ac.uk/buddhist/

Very interesting Matt, thanks. I think this is a Degreeinfo first, a somewhat obscure religious degree program is discovered by someone *other* than Tom Head. [IMG]

How delightful, Matt! Thanks! This made my day.

You might write Prof. Harvey and ask if you could take a couple of modules as a "non-degree student," then transfer them in when the program comes available...?

    Good luck!

    Cheers,

Thanks Matt! Just what I've been looking for. I am finishing my BA through COSC and should be ready in ample time if the program is approved. The closest I have found is in courses teaching transpersonal pyschology, such as ITP and Saybrook, which may be altered some to have a more Buddhist perspective (ITP is more willing to allow for alternative methods of learning through than is Saybrook). Another alternative, though I have not checked into it, may be through something like Vermont College or Union Institute.

Thanks, Matt! This is the best Buddhist studies option that I've yet seen. I am actually tempted to enroll in it myself. (Can't have too many masters degrees, I guess...)

I'll post a couple of additional Buddhist possibilities. John Piquet already suggested one of them. The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto CA offers several regionally accredited DL certificate and masters programs that might be of interest:

And for those for whom accreditation isn't an issue, the CA-approved but un-millish San Diego University of Integrative Studies offers an assortment of DL programs, up to and including a Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology with a Tibetan Buddhist Psychology emphasis.

Just an update to the information discussed above, and posted at http://www.sunderland.ac.uk/buddhist/. Peter Harvey states that the program can be completed completely through DL (no on-site visits), and will be in the neighborhood of $1,241 per course, or $7,446 for the program (today's conversion rates used).

As all of the modules are being designed "de novo," one can't take a module prior to the September 2002 start date to "get a feel" for the program. However, he did mention that it would help if I became familiar with his intro book (http://shop.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=6890IA5O8P&mscssid=9CW3B31M9MBX9GA0GAJJK18SDP5G0KMD&isbn=0521313333), as it forms the foundation for the first module (an updated edition of the book is due out soon). If any of you have further questions, I would suggest e-mailing Peter Harvey -- [email protected] -- he certainly has been responsive to my questions.
