You guys (males and females) have been soooooooooo very supportive and patient of me and for my decision to continue with my doctoral studies. Although when I came here I didn’t necessarily know what area I wanted to study, just recently and for the first time since receiving my masters, I am excited about learning. One could say that I’ve reached my Nia. For this and for the many reasons I’m sure you know, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas (those who believe in Christmas) and Happy Holidays (for those who do not).

    From my heart to yours!

By the way, I was accepted into Capella.

    Shay,

Merry Christmas to you as well.

Since you have decided to go the Capella route - get yourself to a residency as soon as you can :)

Thanks for the advice, Shawn. I'm sure you're talking from experience so I will but out of curiosity, why? Are they typically short of space or something?

    Shay,

    A few reasons:

    1. Although there is always space at colloquia, often times you can't get rooms at the Capella rate. Therefore you are scrambling to find accommodations. For my three colloquia, I preferred staying at the site. This has never been an issue for me, but I know other learners who have had this problem.

    2. If you don't mind sharing a room, once you have a room reserved for colloquia, you can post a message in the colloquia discussion boards stating that you are looking for a roommate. In addition to saving money, my roommate experiences were awesome. (Many late nights talking about our programs, suggestions, etc.)

    3. You will receive a great deal of advice about how to navigate the doctoral journey at colloquia; so if you can get to one sooner rather than later, this will be a good thing for you.

    4. It's not too early to start thinking mentor (aka dissertation chair). This will be a time for you to meet some Capella faculty in person to try to find the right fit.

I would also add the following advice for any doctoral student:

If you have a good idea on what you want to research for your dissertation, tailor your course papers towards your topic. This will make it easier for you to prep for the comps and the literature review for the dissertation. In addition, you can submit your course papers for conferences. Besides the obvious benefit to the vita, at conferences you can shop for your outside reader.

If you have any Capella specific questions - send me a PM and I'll give you my e-mail. Best of luck on the journey.

    Shawn

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all!

I would ask that everyone take a moment tonight and tomorrow to remember the brave members of our armed forces who cannot be with their families this season. Whatever one thinks of the current political climate in the world, these men & women are sacrificing everything so we can be safe with our families during the holidays.

Merry Christmas to all. Does anyone know what happened to the member that was in an accident and his wife posted his recovery progress?

    Mark Isreal is his name!

I hate to nitpick, especially because I lost the bookmark to his recovery page, but I believe the name is Mark *Israel*.

A good report of his progress would be a perfect holiday blessing!

Christmas Eve/Morning at Capella Rocks' house...

To fully appreciate this everyone has to understand that I have 7 children:

    Ages are: 16, 14, 13, 10, 6, 3, 7 1/2 months.

    Christmas Eve:

9:00 p.m. - final check on Santa's location on Norad tracks Santa - send kids to bed.

9:30 p.m. - Put 6 yr old back in bed

10:00 p.m. - Santa, Mrs. Claus, and two elves (13 and 10 yr old) finish wrapping and putting gifts under tree

11:30 p.m. - Finished! Congratulate ourselves for getting done before midnight. Go to bed.

    Christmas Day:

1:30 a.m. - 3 year old wakes up and runs downstairs. Wakes everyone up.

    2:00 a.m. - Everyone back in bed

    2:30 a.m. - 7 1/2 month old wakes up

    5:00 a.m. - 7 1/2 month goes back to bed.

7:00 a.m. - other children wake up - older children keep younger children at bay

8:00 a.m. - parents are awakened by impatient children.

    Christmas is great :)

    Lol - Lol

Shawn: 7 kids is nothing - try having giving birth while working on a PhD full time and never missing a beat. But seriously, 7 is a small family where I come from so, I tell you what - since we are now both Capella students - I can come over and bring my four (including my 14 month old)?

    Happy New Year to you!
