I received a letter today from my HR Department telling me that I was approved to attend Capella University. Go figure! They refused to pay for me to continue with Argosy University, even though I wrote several letters and met with the Director and brought along supporting documentation that Argosy was not a cyber institution that they had previously indicated. Capella University was among the list of schools that I submitted to them and never in my wildest imagination would I have thought they would approve Capella University. In fact, I was certain that they would disapprove of Capella under the same grounds that they disapproved of Argosy. Well, after speaking with the HR assistant, I found out that the Director of Operations has a degree from Capella and two of the supervisors also have Capella degrees. I guess Capella is more far reaching than I previously thought. Pinch me - I must have fallen asleep and didn't know!

Weird. Your HR people have it completely backwards. The Sarasota campus of Argosy is way older than Capella, a cyber-institution, if memory serves.

I too am dumbfounded - although I am very happy with my Capella doctoral studies, I'm not impressed with the route your employer is taking here.

If you really want to do the Agrosy DBA - I'd fight for it. You know what is in your best interest. Best of luck.

    Confused and Unsure

I am somewhat in a state of confusion. On the one hand, I feel as if I'd be an idiot to pass up having my education paid for by someone other than myself, and on the other hand, I like Argosy. Capella does have a lot going for it. I discovered that Capella offers a PhD in Training and Performance Improvement at the School of Education. I checked the curriculum out and found it really interesting. So, if I end up chosing to go with Capella, I would most likely go with this program.

When I compare Argosy and Capella, I would actually place them in the same bracket. What do you think? or rather, which would you chose and why?

    Thanks,

I'm with you, I don't see any major differences. I chose Capella over Walden because Walden's summer residencies conflicted with my annual training with the National Guard - Argosy wasn't on my radar.

If your employer is going to pay for Capella - that's great, and I can understand that; but I beleive it's wrong for them to say Capella is OK, but Argosy is not. Did your employer say why?

The two schools are comparable these days, except that Argosy is now made up of the old CSPP, as well as the old U. of Sarasota. Both take a short-residency approach to doctoral learning.

I don't think Argosy's longer history makes the decision "backwards" because Capella is every bit as much legitmate as Argosy. Not "backwards," but certainly wrong. If Capella is acceptable, so should Argosy be.

The fact that Argosy is a brick and mortar graduate school that offers a distance learning component MAY provide an advantage to graduates in a very competitive job market. Although both are RA, the brick and mortar factor cannot be cavalierly disregarded and should be factored in to any decisions regarding which school to attend.

    Capella Grad Teaching for Argosy...

Well, I am a Capella grad, and I teach for a number of schools, including Argosy (online, and one weekend per month on campus).

I have also taken classes at Nova Southeastern (I started with Capella, switched to Nova, and back to Capella).

So, since I have seen it all, my basic recommendation is this: When you have a great teacher, any school is fine. When the teacher is lousy, it makes for a poor experience.

I have had great teachers at Capella, and poor ones. The same is true for Nova. My first class there was awe inspiring. The second was such a waste of time, I returned to Capella (and then proceeded to find the same pattern).

Now, I was in industry for 20+ years, and wanted to make a transition to academia, so got my PhD at Capella. Instead of having to move yet again to another city (as was the case several times in my telecom career), I now:

    a) Work full time as a program chair at ITT Tech (school of electronics technology) and sit on the national curriculum committee.

    b) Teach at just about every school you can think of (as time permits), including:

    UoP
    Argosy
    Axia
    DeVry
    Franklin U
    TUI
    Strayer
    Columbia Southern

    c) Have gotten into a number of course authoring projects with Pearson Publishing.

So, did Capella get it done for me? Yes it did.

Agreed, and I prefer your way of saying it... There was certainly nothing inferior about the old University of Sarasota DBA; statements that seem to imply the contrary struck me as weird.

You really do seem to work for strange, ignorant people. Like most people here, I'd put Argosy and Capella in the same general category. I suppose if transferring to Capella doesn't lose you much time and they'll pay, then why not?
