    Hello all >>

I live in Boston, and I’m 23 years old... i want to teach psychology for high school.. I know that only a bachelor’s degree is required…but would it be viewed differently if it was completed online??

my friend who is in the army told me that ashworth college was listed as an online school, and he started taking online courses a few months ago.

i am working a full-time and part –time job, and i cant attend college (the nearest community college is 40 minutes away) so i am thinking of signing up with an online school.

But I don’t want to waste 2 years of my life and my money if I won’t be able to transfer my credits..

Would any college accept an associate’s degree from ashworth college?? is the school accredited?? or will i get laughed at when I go to apply to 4-year schools?

i was thinking after ashworth to apply to u of phoenix, but it's pricey, what other schools would accept ashworth ?

would i be able to teach in a high school in massachusetts (or florida where i am thinking of moving in the near future) with an online degree?

    THANKS in advance!!

Merry CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR to alll...

Ashworth University www.ashworthuniversity.edu is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council www.detc.org . The Distance Education and Training Council is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation www.chea.org and the United States Department of Education www.ed.gov . Thus, DETC is a legitimate accreditor and Ashworth is legitimately accredited. However, DETC is national accreditation, which has less acceptance and therefore less utility than regional accreditation. Degreeboard www.degreeboard.com maintains a list of regionally accredited schools that accept nationally accredited schools' degrees and credits. You would need to check with the State Board of Education in Massachusetts and Florida to see whether they accept online degrees for purposes of state licensure, as these things tend to differ from state to state.

Western Governors University (WGU) offers a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science which leads to teacher licensure for Grades 5 through 12.

"The B.A. in Social Science (5-12) prepares you for secondary teacher licensure in middle school or high school social science. The program trains you to become a highly-qualified teacher and includes supervised practice teaching in an actual classroom setting. WGU is the only online teacher education institution in the nation to receive NCATE accreditation."

    EuPhonic,

Well, as for me I would recommend you to avoid National Accreditted Institute as possible. Especially you're looking to teach in the future. If you're thinking about applying to University of Phoenix after obtaining an Associate degree from Ashworth University. Then you should choose University of Massaschusetts at Lowell. URL: http://continuinged.uml.edu/online/blaonline.htm . UofM-Lowell offers Bachelor of Liberal Arts in Psychology. There are lot of possitives to choose UofM-Lowell over Ashworth University/University of Phoenix or any other institution in your situation.

    1. University of Massachusetts -Lowell (Regional Accredit Insitution)
    2. Well known institution in Massachusetts and Northeastern Region
    3. Completing the degree at one institute without losing credits for trasfering
    4. Qualification for in-state tuition
    5. MOST IMPORTANT: Your future employer don't have to ask you about your degree whether online or B&M. For example when you list in your resume that you work in Boston as the same time you earn your degree from California or any other placess that over 1,000 miles away. If you attend University of Massachusetts, you don't have to tell them that you earn your degree from distance/online.

For me, I listed in my resume that I worked at Camp Pendleton, California as the same time I earned my Bachelor degree from Troy University, Troy, Alabama. Which is over 2,000 miles away; it looks extremely odd. When I applied for the the Marine Corps Commissioning Officer Program, it was a little bit hassle.

Well, that is my two cents from my experience and vision. Good luck with your decission.

    I would start here
    http://www.doe.mass.edu/Educators/e_license.html?section=k12

    according to the faq:
Is a bachelor`s degree required for a Massachusetts academic educator`s license?
Yes. A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university is required. Please note that a master's degree or any other advanced graduate degree would not satisfy the bachelor's degree requirement.

Your bachelors degree has to be from an accredited College or Univeristy, this may mean that a DETC or ACICS degree would be fine.

Though i would check with the state to make sure.

if the school isn't respected why is it listed as a school for those in the army who are studying from all over the world?

I would try googling "Florida - state licensure - education" (or something like that).

    Euphoric,

I didn't say that Ashworth College/University and University of Phoenix are not respectable schools. The number one reason to avoid National Accredit Institution to prevent your further education such as Master degree with top Tier 1 schools. Most of those schools only accepted Regional Accredited degrees. Or what if you want to teach at College later? The University of Phoenix is a profit institution, and they would take anybody for the admission. I rather to attend the school that I want to be at that school not the school staffs want me to be there.

The Army, Airforce Insitute, and Marine Corps Institute are also accreditted by DETC (National Accredited Agency). However, their credits are evaluated by ACE, and the majority of RA schools accept ACE credits. The Department of Defense's DANTES supports those National Accredit Insitution because their mission is education without boundary.
