Update from Nova Southeastern - School of Business

I currently am at NSU taking a class (first one in the doctoral accounting concentration) and I thought I'd pass along some news from Nova Southeastern.

The school appears to be doing very well overall. In particular, the busienss school has solid enrollments and a brand new building. They are actively recruiting faculty with strong research backgrounds.

The class I'm in shows the new emphasis - 10 years ago we didn't have access to CompuStat and other advanced financial databases. We do now - and I'm neck deep in accounting research and methods.

Most importantly, the school appears to be getting close to AACSB accreditation. Apparently, AACSB has been on campus already for a visit. NSU is reportedly executing a plan to complete everything that AACSB requires. It would seem that AACSB accreditation may come in the next year or two. I doubt the school will say anything publicly on this until the accreditation is earned.

My take is this - if you are looking for a short residency doctorate in business NSU has a solid chance to make AACSB. When this comes - NSU will certainly shine bright in the field of part-time DBA/PhD programs.

    Great news!

I have been watching the AACSB/distance DBA/PhD dance with some anticipation. Apparently the University of Florida is also starting a DBA program. Since I don't want to start my DBA until 2011, it looks like my timing will be good and I'll have at least two AACSB programs available to me- and both in Florida, which is the other end of the country for me. But heck, if it's AACSB I won't complain.

Thanks for the update Andy! And let us know how your program goes.

Andy, are you starting another program, looking to add a concentration to your D.B.A., or just taking a course for enrichment?

I'm adding another concentration to the two I've already completed (management and IT management). This is also a form of continuous improvement and professional development for me.

Great news! Thanks for sharing. When I spoke with admissions a few months back their answer was somewhat evasive. Now I know why.

I disagree with Andy. Nova Southeastern already shines. :) But AACSB would be fantastic, not only for NSU, but for other short-residency programs looking for AACSB's recognition.

Good news for NA students as well. Can anyone think of another AACSB institution with an official policy of considering NA degrees for graduate admissions? I can't.

    I'm at Nova as well

I'm currently in the DBA program at Nova with a major in accounting and I must say I am very pleased with the program and excited about the possibility of the school gaining AACSB accredidation. Andy do you only have to take the 4 accounting courses in order to obtain the accounting major?

My understanding - and experience with the IT Management area - is that i have to complete the four courses for the school to note "Accounting" on my transcript.

In my case I also took 4 masters level courses - 2 intermediate, 1 advanced and one auditing - to get myself ready for the doctoral work. It turns out that i couldn't take the doctoral audit course without this.

But Vince - As far as I can read the website, the School of Business won't consider NA students - they appear to require an RA degree for their DBA program (and some other programs such as Education that I checked).

You appear to be correct about the DBA program. However, the Master's business programs still state a policy of consideration of non RA degrees for admission.

Andy, please keep us updated on Nova. For some reason they are very secretive on the AACSB process. Nova is on my short list for my doctorate.

I'll be happy to let everyone know what I find out. I suspect that NSU is being cautious - they have a plan that should work out, but it isn't done until final approval happens. Further, most PAs have rules about what you can and cannot say while you are going through accreditation. I suspect that AACSB has some restrictions.
