Do candidates for dissertation doctorates ever get research funding from non-academic sources?

  2. Pharmaceutical Industry is active in funding research projects that are of value to them. You may find some useful information from the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers' Association (PMA) or contact the drug companies directly.

Question: "Do candidates for dissertation doctorates ever get research funding from non-academic sources? "

Oh, goodness, yes. As my daughter and I point out in "Finding Money for College" one of the wonderful resources out there is the book "Foundation Grants for Individuals." Since the first edition of our book, we heard from quite a few people who benefited from such grants.

My favorite such grant was probably the impoverished Irish beginning law student, who pointed out, in his application, that if his new wife became pregnant, he would have to drop out of school, and birth control pills were illegal there. His grant was for funds for three years of pills. Most grants to individuals, however, are a bit larger and bit more directly academic.
