I am wondering why these two guys are looking for DETC accreditation? I thought they are RA and parts of the its main institution.

Ellis College of New York Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL

    Any idea?

I don't presume to speak for the schools involved, but they may feel that DETC accreditation speaks to the effectiveness of their distance ed programs in particular, as opposed to their RA accreditation which applies to the entire school. After all, DETC specializes in programs delivered via distance education, and one would think that after all these years they've learned a little something about what it takes to build successful distance education programs. Another possibility is that the parent institutions are seeking separate accreditation for their distance learning arms ahead of some sort of separation or sale a la TUI and Touro College.

BYU is seeking DETC for its independent study programs. Ellis College of NYIT recently merged with Cardean University (I believe), which was already DETC, so (if I am correct about the above) the application would be for re-accreditation of a newly merged institution. ;)

DETC regularly and consistently ignores its policy of dealing only with entire universities, not parts of universities, as well as their rule of not dealing with schools that offer the Ph.D. As an example, they granted accreditation to just the Centre for Labour Market Studies of Leicester University (unit of a large university), to the University of South Africa (which has offered doctorates for nearly 100 years), to Open University of America, etc.

When I asked the head of DETC about this years ago, his response was, "Let's not go there, John."
