My wife is completeing her BS with plans to earn a masters primarily to teach online. She is looking at english and/or history for a masters. She wants to stick with gen ed course to teach (no business or IT).

First, any suggestions for high need gen ed areas to teach online (no math or science)?

Any suggestions for schools to earn a masters? I am looking at Tiffin, Fort Hays, American Military University, and Western New Mexico University.

Since this will all be paid with cash, I prefer cheap!

Math and psychology always seem to appear in the job listings, as do history and English. It probably comes down to personal preference, as the needs of schools seem to ebb & flow like everything else in life.

I don't need to tell you; teaching online can be tedious at times, so I think an interest in the subject matter should be a major priority.

The interdisciplinary MA at Western New Mexico looks interesting in that it allows you two subject areas at 18 hours each (English and History are options there). The price there looks pretty sweet too compared to many others.

Agreed. If I were specifically looking to adjunct, that's the program I'd consider.
