Hello, a new guy here to the forum about to tackle the challenge of finishing the degree. I want to say a big thanks to Steve Foerester for helping me get approved, even with the website issues lately! I've had ample time to use the search function, so I hope that my questions are more productive rather than banter! I've learned a ton so far and I look forward to your advice and input in the near future! TO the issue at hand, I'm currently trying to decide between TESC and Excelsior for a degree completion program. I currently have 84 semester hrs from an RA university, plus FAA certificates, and some army stuff that give lower level ACE credit. I'm leaning towards the TESC BA in Liberal Studies or the BSL from Excelsior in Liberal Arts. I only have 6SH of "upper credit" hrs that meet the excelsior req's, but I understand that TESC will accept 2000 lvl courses as "upper". 1. Has anyone had luck using FAA certificates at excelsior? 2. IF so, what level of credit did they earn you and where (ie elective?) I'm trying to piece together a plan without paying both schools the 75 bucks for the unofficial review, but Excelsior won't give me a straight answer on the FAA stuff. If you'd like, I can post the credits that I already have if that helps! Thanks!
Glad to help! And it definitely looks like you've done your homework. Let me ask you, though, you mention Thomas Edison and Excelsior but not the third one of the so-called Big Three, Charter Oak State College. Now, I admit I'm biased in that I'm one of their alumni, but I had a great experience with them that included prompt straight answers from their admissions people -- who really were counselors and not salespeople! You might consider shooting them an email to see whether you get some information from them: http://www.cosc.edu -=Steve=-
From the Excelsior Business Catalog (page 47): Private Pilot 4 semester hours Commercial 6 semester hours Instrument 6 semester hours Multiengine 2 semester hours Flight Instructor 2 semester hours It appears that they only accept fixed wing airman certificates - it doesn't say anything about choppers, airships, A&P, etc.
I think I've decided to go with tesc because most of my credits are lower level and Tesc will apply them to the major or area of study. THey also give more credit for my FAA certificates. As soon as my unnoficial eval comes back, I'll post the results and my plan! From reading other posts, I understand that TESC will transfer a "D" to meet gen ed requirements, but will they transfer for an area of study or major? THat will make a difference in the number of credits I need to finish! I'm planning on the BA in Liberal Studies at this point. THanks, J
TESC also accepts credit by portfolio (as do COSC and Excelsior). See this article: http://www.degreeinfo.com/article23_1.html You might find you can get some upper level credits this way.
Where did you read that TESC will tansfer 'D's? I have one 'D' in a philosophy course taken years ago, but they refused to transcript it into the free electives category even.
I recall Excelsior College accepting D grades, as CoachTurner says, but have not seen anything to suggest Thomas Edison State College accepts D grades. If TESC accepts D grades in non-concentration area, kindly cite the reference. Thanks.
got this via email from tesc: Yes, we can accept a D as long as it is not in English Composition... if it is, your other grade needs to be at least a C. Same goes for area of study, you must maintain a 2.0/C average in that section. Other than that, we can accept a D in any category. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Iris Lewin Admissions Counselor Math has been my achilles heel also, along with too much partying and not enough studying when i was younger.
Well you have just saved me the expense of another 3-credit course in the humanities. I will call Thomas Edison State College this week to have the course applied to my BA. Thank you for the information; much appreciated.
