After carefully considering all options I have decided not to pursue my DBA and get another master degree to make me more competitive for an Adjunct position at a community college. I have a MA in Leadership from Bellevue but I have found no programs that this transitions into for teaching. So, I am going to either get a MBA at Bellevue in Human Resource Management or a MA in Management in Human Resource Management from Troy University. I just can’t decide.

If I go to Bellevue they will transfer 3 classes making the total credit hours needed 27.
If I go to Troy they will transfer only one class making the total credit hours needed 33.

    About Troy:
Troy is in Alabama and I am in Alabama so the DL part will be easily masked.
They also have a very large campus (20,000 students) and a pretty good football team : )
They offer five terms per year so I should be able to complete the program in 14 months.
It would be nice to visit and even go to graduation this time.
    Troy Total Cost: $10,125

Bellevue’s program is a MBA so if I decided to ever go back to the corporate world (I own my own business right now) it would be nice to have.
As a graduate already I know their system and how things work.
With four terms per year I would be able to complete the program in 14 months
    Bellevue Total Cost: $8,505

    My thoughts are…
Bellevue would be great considering their program will only require 9 classes but Troy’s program is a Master of Science in Management and this might look better for an adjunct position since a MBA is a professional degree. But I already have a MA so this might not be an issue. Additionally, Troy is in Alabama and Bellevue is in NE and that’s hard to explain since I am in Alabama.

So what are everyone’s thoughts on this….

I have to decide quickly so I can get everything rolling by Dec.

I think that both are fine schools but if teaching is your primary goal for earning the degree, I would look to schools that are AACSB accredited.

Bellevue offers the best value. It appears, however, that you’re concern about it being a DL program. Why mask the fact that you have a DL degree? Doing so perpetuate the general population’s negative feelings about DL.

As distance learners, we should be promoting our schools and delivery methods every change we have, only then will the negative perception about online and distance education as a whole end.

If you can put aside your own preconceptions, you’ll find that Bellevue is the better choice.

    Good luck,

    Pepe

I think this is an easy decision. Troy will iikely play on national TV twice this year. How about when Osi Umenyiora or DeMarcus Ware go in front of millions on Monday Night Football and say "<name>, Troy University". No one has ever heard of Bellevue outside of DL circles and the surrounding towns.

I like Troy (formerly Troy State), have taken a few classes through the school at remote sites, and yes, they have a good football team this year. The Trojans may even win the Sun Belt Conference.

But another option to consider, University of Alabama, also offers two online masters degrees in management (MA in Management, MS in Operations Management). Tuition runs $278 per semester hour for in-state and out-of-state residents.

I did not want it to sound that way...

I have read in a couple of adjunct forums how they (University Staff) view DL and was only trying to make the point with Troy that would be one less thing to overcome.

UA is a great school my grandfather graduated, played football, and coached there, my mom went there, and my grandmother went there. The problem is admissions. I graduated from UNA with a 2.1 GPA and they will not overlook that. Even though I finished my MA with a 3.75 and scored a 565 on the GMAT they did not feel I would be successful in the program. :(

This is a good point and I would be able to go to the games. Although I am a UA fan, it would be a nice perk and since I will probably stay in the south, it might help with the schools I will be focused on.

    I just don't know...

Sounds like you have the ability to do very well in a grad program in business. NA must think awfully high of themselves.

    Never say die.

    1. If you haven't already, complete - and excel - in pre-MBA prerequisite courses (survey courses in accounting, management, finance, business calc/stats etc.).

    2. 'Bama's average GMAT score was 633. Retake the GMAT and exceed this score by a comfortable margin.

    3. When these are accomplished, re-write your essay. Point out that you took their first rejection as a challenge to be overcome. Also, point out unique aspects of your background that would enrich and diversify the classroom experience for other admitted students. Demonstrate leadership potential.

Thank you. It would be great to finish at UA. I know my family would be happy about it and it would be a great accomplishment for me
