Hey guys in about another 7 weeks or so I’ll be at the half way point for my MBA with an emphasis in Organizational Leadership from Ashford. As you may know for those of you who remember my postings from about 6 months to a year ago, I would like to become a part time online adjunct instructor. I am really passionate about 3 areas of study:

    Leadership
    Criminal Justice
    Management

Now I know there is little to no calling for adjuncts in Leadership, as far as I can tell anyways, but my question is this:

Would an MBA qualify one to adjunct in Management or would a MS in Management generally be required? In other words, for Business Management undergrad courses, will an MBA suffice in most situations?

My reason for asking is because I am considering transitioning right into an MA/MS degree as soon as I finish at Ashford in order to broaden my horizons and teach in something I am passionate in. I have given strong consideration to an MSM but if it would be mostly redundant, I’ll get an MSCJ or MACJ and teach in CJ instead, especially since that is where my professional experience is.

Now I don’t plan on working in CJ in about 2 years or so. I am hopefully going to make a successful career transition into some type of government business position such as assistant to a city manager or business analyst for a local government. I do plan on being a reserve police officer during my free time but not as a profession as the demands are too great on my family.

    Any advice?

Every school has different standards as to what they want in an adjunct, but the most often cited requirements I've seen are a RA graduate degree with at least 18 graduate credits in the subject area to be taught.

I think OL is close enough to Management that you'd meet some school's standards, but probably not others.

Thanks Bruce, however I really only have 3 Organizational Leadership classes.

My assesment is that of the following degree program the ones with a "+" sign next to them will qualify me to teach managment course. Do you agree?

BUS 599 Introduction to Quantitative Principles
+BUS 600 Management Communications with Technology Tools
    BUS 610 Organizational Behavior
    +BUS 620 Managerial Marketing
    +BUS 630 Managerial Accounting
    +BUS 640 Managerial Economics
    +BUS 644 Operations Management
    +BUS 650 Managerial Finance
    BUS 670 Legal Environment
BUS 660 Contemporary Issues in Organizational Leadership
    BUS 661 Leading Organizational Change
BUS 691 Strategies in Organizational Leadership

They at least approach the topic of say, accounting from a management perspective causing me to feel that perhaps a MSM would be something of a redundant degree. What do you think? Would these courses be considered Management courses?

    Thanks for your help Bruce.

Would it not be nice if a school would just say...This " " degree to teach " ".

I just got off the phone with a school asking that question. I have a MA in Leadership and asked if a MBA would help. His answer was no. A MA in Management would look much better and is a teaching degree. My best beat would be to start taking PhD classes and when I get 18 hours in management start sending out resumes.

I still have not made up my mind about the MBA. I only need 8 classes at a cost of $8,765 and I could finish in one year vs. MA in Management that would take almost 2 years and cost $11,000. Anyone know a good MA or MS in Management or Business?

Consider getting the MBA. Then locate a school where you can transfer the "bulk" of the MBA credits into an MS, MA, MM program. For the same cost as the MA you list (+/- a bit) you can end up with both an MBA and a MA/MS/MM. For example, MBA from University of XXXX and MA OL from Saint XXXX University. There are tons of opportunities out there for such an option which seems, first blush, quite palatable in any career (business/teaching/etc.) that you might find yourself in.

You mention a PhD. If you're interested in that I'd do that and be a year closer to being done rather than get another Master's, especially if they'd serve the same purpose for adjuncting.

I can probably take 7 additional classes at Texas A&M Commerce and get an MSM, but at a cost of $6,000 and probably not be finished until 2009. I was just hoping I had the Management credits already.

With the obvious caveat that I have no business education, I would say anything with "Managerial" or "Management" would qualify.

In my experience, universities have some leeway in what they count towards the 18 credit requirement. I have an MBA without 18 credits in any specific discipline, but I've never been turned down for a teaching job.

Thanks guys. I'll attempt to adjunct with my MBA, if all goes well, I may get an MSCJ and use my adjunct income to pay for it.
