    Study Mode & Content: The DBA requires completion of 120 credit points over a minimum of 2 years and maximum of 3 years of study comprising the following units:

    * Research Issues, Methods & Analysis (20 cp)

    * Management Consulting Report (20 cp)

    * Literature Review & Proposal (40cp)

    * Dissertation (40 cp)

    Research Issues, Methods & Analysis

    This commencing unit of the DBA introduces students to the fundamental research concepts, questions and processes in an applied organisational context. The unit provides an overview of the logic underpinning applied research; the formulation of research questions and the nexus between questions and types of research; and the nature and conduct of research using quantitative and qualitative methods. Importantly, this unit seeks to broaden a student's appreciation of research issues, styles and methods in an applied organisational setting.

    The unit commences with an intensive seminar and students are required to complete two research papers, each of 3,000 words, which explore applied quantitative and qualitative methodologies from a critical perspective.

    Management Consulting Report

    Requires students to identify and analyse an issue or problem of strategic and practical significance to an organisation in vivo and to prepare or implement action plans appropriate to their understanding of the realities of the specific situation. In undertaking this unit students are encouraged to assume the role of a consultant to an organisation, or analyse the issue from the perspective of a general manager confronted with competing interests and priorities. Either perspective is intended to anchor the problem or issue in the context of a dynamic organisational environment that almost inevitably raises value laden questions about a broad range of social, technological and economic factors. Coping adequately with the complexity and ambiguities encountered in practice is fundamental to completing this unit.

    The unit with an intensive seminar and students are required to prepare a written report of about 10,000 words that explicates the nature, context and scope of the issue or problem under investigation to implement action plans that may enhance the strategic position or operational performance of an organisation in a sustainable manner.

    Literature Review & Proposal

    Exposes students to the significance and conduct of literature reviews based on scholarly and business relevant sources of information to assist in the formulation of appropriate research questions linked to a specific research method and plan of execution. Consequently, emphasis is given to conducting searches of primary and secondary sources of literature and data to distil information relevant to the topic and research strategy. In undertaking the review, students will be required to demonstrate a critical appreciation of the concepts, ideas and theories essential to their specific research proposal.

    The unit commences with an intensive seminar and students are required to complete a report of 8-10,000 words detailing their understanding of the scholarly and professional literature review, including the development of a sound research strategy relevant to their proposed dissertation topic.

    Progression to the Dissertation component of the DBA is contingent upon satisfactory completion of this unit.

    Dissertation

    As the capstone unit, the Dissertation requires students to implement and complete the applied research strategy associated with their approved topic under academic (or other approved) supervision.

    The Dissertation commences with an intensive seminar and students are required to present their written dissertation and recommendations in scholarly format for their supervisor's approval, prior to the dissertation proceeding to external assessment. The length of the dissertation may range between 30-40,000 words, including appendices, but not bibliographic information.

    Entry: Completion of a Master of Business Administration degree, or equivalent degree, from a recognised tertiary institution; a minimum of

    5 years proven professional work experience with a particular involvement in management, management consultancy, management teaching, management training, or management research; proof of written and oral proficiency in English achieved through either completion of a degree taught and examined in the English language, and/or attainment of a valid IELTS score of a minimum overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0. The University reserves the right to seek additional information from applicants and may require attendance at an interview.
