My wife needs some help with a 1 question survey for a class so I made her a surveymonkey simple survey. I also added some questions about perception of DL looking into an idea for a study.

If you're in the HR profession or have opinions about HR and/or DL degrees, please take a minute and visit http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=jjGSUPWmp9H0ay180rHksw_3d_3d

    THANKS!

PS: I know, it's not the best formatted survey but it's a quick one for now.

Interesting survey...just completed it. I'd love to see the results when they are ready.

I'll post them here - I'm thinking I might be able to create an interesting thesis exploring whether the method of delivery of a DL degree is really the limiting factor or if the limiting factor is the reputation of the school awarding.

The one question I had on your survey is "how do the HR offices know that a degree is done via DL?"

If all other things were equal I would want to review college transcripts before making a hiring descision.

Thanks to everyone who has answered already! Y'all are great! Betty thanks you too.

Airtorn, there are a number of indicators that might bring the question such as "how did you live in New York and earn a degree in Florida" but I agree that such knowledge is usually only known if the applicant offers it. The question here assumes that the HR office is aware only for the purpose of gaging the perception of these variations.

Ian: I agree, that would be ideal. I'm afraid though that far too many HR offices don't confirm degrees at all, let alone review the transcripts.

Thanks again to everyone answering - it's still open.... :)

Speaking of that, I listed I was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California in my resume; and as the same time I earned my Bachelor degree from Troy University in Troy, Alabama. It does look odd; however, all the employers never asked me a question about it. Some of them asked me if I had graduated from Troy University.

At my last company, a major aerospace company, resumes (from Monster) were directed automatically to the person who wrote the job requisition; then that dept made all the interview selections. Only then did HR get into the loop organizing an interview appt. Inteviews were conducted by the hiring individual and job offers were made by the hiring individual. Upper management approval was required if the salary offed was over a certain percentage increase. HR then provided the formal hiring process.

Regarding college hiring teams of engineering managers traveled to specified campuses, along with an HR rep, and offered entry level jobs.

HR did verify degrees, financial & criminal background checks, and eligibility to work in the USA.

1 An MA from Harvard University Extension (completed partially online) 84.6 22
An MA from University of Florida (completed traditionally) 15.4 4

2 A Bachelor of Arts from the flagship state university in your state (completed substantially online) 46.2 12
A Bachelor of Arts from the flagship state university in your state (completed traditionally) 53.9 14

3 A Bachelor of Arts from a lesser public university in your state. (completed substantially online) 96.2 25
An Associate of Arts from the same university. (completed traditionally) 3.9 1

4 A Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix (completed traditionally) 7.7 2
A Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts (completed substantially online) 92.3 24

5 An MA from Florida State University (completed substantially online) 76.9 20
An MA from a USNWR tier-4 private college in your state (completed traditionally) 23.1 6

1: Indicates that the reputation of the awarding school is more important than delivery method
2: Indicates that delivery method is only marginally important when reputation is equal
3: Delivery method isn’t important enough to outweigh level of degree
4: Indicates that the reputation of the awarding school is more important than delivery method
5: Indicates that the reputation of the awarding school is more important than delivery method even when reputations are relatively close. May indicate that a preference for traditional increases in importance as reputations become closer.

Understanding that people here generally understand and support higher education by DL.

Research Question: Is delivery method (traditional vs online) more important than reputation of awarding college?

Hypothesis: Reputation of the awarding college is a more important consideration than delivery method even when discussing generally reputable colleges.

Thanks to everyone who helped out, this leads me to believe that there is a measurable research objective here.

Just an FYI, when I think of fourth tier private colleges in my state, I think about schools that have lesser reputations than Florida State's. I wonder if other responses were similarly skewed.

Point taken - thank you. Any suggestions on two well knowns where the reputation is reasonably close but not equal to use in place of question 5.

    Maybe Florida State and ??

using a tier 4 example in this question was a clear flaw on my part - it doesn't answer the question I was considering. But, the reputations need to be far enough apart that they are not equal, just close. Florida State is USNWR #112 - would using a tier 3 work for this question? Thoughts?
