    Blekinge Institute of Technology

    BTH/MAM/INTERNET MBA

    Programme descriptor for

    Master of Business Administration
    60 ECTS credit points

    1. General information
The programme offers broad knowledge of Business Administration to
students with prior university studies and with working experience. The
programme offers studies in the main functional business areas such as
marketing, finance, accounting, organization, management and strategy.
When relevant, a course has a certain focus on economy and
management in the Information Age. The final course on the programme
is the Master thesis which is an independently written project.

Most of the course work is carried out on the Internet when the students
discuss with each other and communicate with the teachers. The students
meet physically four times during the programme (one time for part-time
students). One credit point (högskolepoäng) in the Swedish system
corresponds to one credit point in the European Credit Transfer System
    (ECTS).

    2. Decision and guidelines
The decision to establish the programme has been made by the
University Board of Blekinge Institute of Technology. The department
responsible for the programme is the School of Management. The study
programme descriptor has been approved by the Board of Undergraduate
Studies at Blekinge Institute of Technology, 2004-09-01, the latest
    revision was made 2007-05-03.

The programme descriptor is valid for students accepted to the
    programme autumn 2007 or later.

    3. Aims and learning outcomes
In addition to the aims regulated nationally, to be found in Appendix B,
the following aims have been set for the programme.

The aim of the programme is to offer the student a broad knowledge of
the subject Business Administration with a deeper understanding of
economy and management in the Information Age.

On completion of the programme the student will:
    i. have acquired a broadened knowledge of the subject Business
    Administration
ii. have gained a deeper understanding of the role of information and
communication technologies in business and especially the
management of business in information economies
iii. be able to investigate loosely defined issues with the use of
relevant research methods and understand the potential and
    limitations of research
iv. be able to effectively find relevant information and to carry out
advanced tasks in international groups over the Internet
    v. be able to make analyses and judgments of complex situations and
to critically evaluate theories and their usefulness in Business
    Administration

    4. Learning and education
The programme is designed to give the student a broad overview of
main functional areas in Business Adminstration. The student is
expected to learn from reading standard textbooks and research articles
and test the knowledge and develop the understanding through
assignments. To support an integrated understanding of the area, the
programme also includes a comprehensive exam before the student starts
with the individual research project. The material and the instruction are
in English. In order to master the course it is required that the student
have good knowledge in the English language.

    5. Main structure of the study programme
The programme is offered both as a full-time programme over one
academic year and as a part-time programme over two academic years.
In both cases, the programme requires effectively 40 weeks of study. It
contains only mandatory courses as follows:

    Blekinge Institute of Technology

    BTH/MAM/INTERNET MBA

    Syllabus

    HISTORY OF MANAGEMENT THOUGHT: INSTRUCTIONS
    Course leader: Ian Robson
    Course starts: September 3, 2007
Course credit: 5 points or 7,5 ECTS
    Course ends: November 4, 2007 (full-time)
    Course ends: January 20, 2008 (part-time)
Requirements: 4 non-graded reports and 1 written exam

Here is a description of the course design and how we are going to
    work.

The main idea with the whole Internet MBA programme is:
    1. To make your studies more flexible. Using Internet you will be able
to choose when and where you want to study. I hope that this is
more valuable to you than to meet in classrooms
    2. To deepen your knowledge of the subject by having frequent
discussions on the Internet with all the other participants in the
course. I urge you to use this opportunity to discuss with all the
    other participants.

These two ideas are to some degree in conflict since intense activity on
the net requires that you study with the same pace and at the same
time - when you input something on the net you want a rather
immediate reaction. The second idea about deeper knowledge is more
important to us so you are all encouraged to promote lively and
    interesting discussions.

    PLAN YOUR STUDIES
You may of course carry out the studies as you please (respect the
deadlines though), but I want to suggest two things:

    4. Start the first week by browsing the readings
    5. Look at the assignments and try to estimate how much time each
will take. Reserve time in your calendar if you are going to work in a
team. Reserve also time for the scheduled Internet discussions.

    ANYTIME DISCUSSIONS
The main purpose with the net discussions is that you should learn from
one another. You are free to discuss anything related to the course
content, assignments, etc anytime. Try to be short and concise in your
discussions. I will only comment on the discussions when I think it is
necessary. Please do not email questions or points of view to me
directly; I cannot respond to frequent emails in large numbers.

    SCHEDULED DISCUSSIONS
Every Thursday during the whole semester (September to January)
between 3 and 4 pm (afternoon, Swedish time) there is a scheduled
discussion around any topics you may choose. As with the other
spontaneous discussions, I will take part but only comment if necessary.
You are not required but encouraged to participate in the discussions –
it will not be part of the course grading.

    NEW COMMUNICATION OPPORTUNITIES
Please also use the new tools Skype and MSN Messenger for
communicating with your fellow students. Read more on the program
    site at www.bth.se/mam/internetmba.

    GRADING
To obtain the grade Pass or Pass with Distinction you need to do the
    following:

    6. Submit reports on the 4 obligatory but non-graded assignments
(they are described below). You may write the reports individually
or in a 2-person team. The feed-back on these reports from me
will be summarised for the whole group in detail but individuals
will be given basic feedback of either “ok” or “improve on...”. You
only have one chance to improve the report if it deemed sub-
standard. Each report should only be 1000 words long so you
need to be very concise. There is one deadline for all these 4
reports – you need to submit all before the course ends but
preferably on the assignment hand-in dates listed below (different
for full-time and part-time students; see “Course ends” dates at
    the top of this document)

    7. Write the individual online exam. An exam example will be
available on the course site one week before the exam. If you
don’t pass the first time you are entitled to two re-exams. The
exams are scheduled to suit both full-time and part-time
students. The exam schedule will be available on the course site.

The final grade on the course is determined by the grade on the written
exam, either Pass or Pass with Distinction.

The assignments as well as the exam will test four different aspects of
    your efforts and learning:
    8. That you have effectively read the required readings
    9. That you have understood main theoretical principles
10.That you can apply your knowledge in a new context
11.That you can independently evaluate and reflect upon the main
    ideas in the course.

THE 4 ASSIGNMENTS (approximately 1000 words each)
12.IDEA SUMMARY: Write a report that summarizes the main ideas and
how they have developed in the history of management theory
based on your reading of the course book

13.INCENTIVE THEORY: Write a report that describes the theoretical
foundations of the role of incentives

14.INFORMATION AGE: Write a report that analyzes the possible
influence of information technology on practical management today
    or in the future

15.MANAGEMENT THEORY: Write a report that discusses the value of
management theories to a) practitioners and b) academics.

    About study on distance
To study on distance gives you a possibility to study at a university far away from
where you live. Distance study is something else than follow a course on Campus,
with teachers and other friends next to you. This type of study means that all
communication between you as students and between teachers will take place on the
Internet. Distance study means that you have to take a bigger responsibility for your
studies and it also means that you have the opportunities to plan your studies more on
your own. To read, follow the instructions and participate in the discussions on It’s
learning will make your studies easier. You are responsible for your own learning and
    get hold of the knowledge.

Communications over the Internet needs recourses, the one who ask a question wants
an answer immediately. The teachers work with more than one course and project and
every question in the course can make hundreds of e-mails. Our goal is to give you an
answer within a week and we hope that you understand that. Another goal is that you
as students help each other in the forums if any problems or questions will show up
during the course. We have learnt that students learn more if they discuss and explain
for each other. We hope that you as a student will be active in the discussions and
follow up what has been said to make it easier both for you and for us as teachers.

    Planning and Deadlines
Plan to spend around 200 hours on the course, i.e. the equivalent of 5 weeks full-time
work. Establish a study schedule to meet a completion date a week before final
examination day. Establish target assignment completion dates, and stay on schedule.

Home and social life easily disrupt the best of study plans – getting into a study
routine is one of the most important success factors for online learning.
We all have different learning styles- and the more we know about how we learn, the
easier it is to understand our personal learning processes and design our own personal
    learning strategy.

Find out more about your learning style and how you can use that knowledge to help
    yourself.

    Active Studies
Use the discussion forum! You will not be graded on any postings in the discussion
    forum.

Whenever you feel unsure of your understanding, or need an example from real life to
bring a point home – ask for it! Post your question in the discussion forum. When
you have an answer to someone else’s question – post it!

The more active you are in your learning activities, the greater your chances of
success. Use the exercises in your text book and discussion questions with fellow
    students.

A good principle is to read the text first, then solve the study problems and then take
    part in the forum discussions.

    Text Reading
The ability to concentrate is naturally a condition of independent study. Whatever
study technique you use, you need to spend effort on understanding what it is that you
    are reading.

As in all study, pen-in-hand is still a good idea; making notes, underlining text,
writing summaries in your own words, noting central terms and concepts.

Don’t be tempted to skip the pictures, diagrams and tables in the text book – they will
provide useful information and help to clarify the text.

    Goals and motivation
Keep in mind the goals you had at the time you enrolled the programme. If you
haven’t already done so, write these goals down so that you can look them up from
time to time, during this course and the courses to come.

Chapter 10 and 12 is not included in the course. Chapter 12 should be red and
    understood.

The assignments will be published on It´s learning in the beginning of the course.

Written examination - The individual home examination will take place on Friday
11th of January 2008. This exam is not supervised, and you will have 5 hours to
complete and submit the paper. The answers will be graded within two weeks. Re-sit
is on Saturday 9th of February 2008. All examinations will be held between 1200 and
1700 hours, CET. Answers submitted after deadline will not be marked.

The written examination will be published on It’s learning at 1200 hours CET.

Note that all assignments must be submitted and graded before you may sit the
    exam.
The written examination, although not supervised, is nevertheless an individual
examination. It has happened in the past that students have misunderstood, and
worked together on questions, then submitting identical, or extremely similar, reports
for grading. These papers were failed, and were grounds for a disciplinary hearing.

The written examination will comprise a number of questions. The questions will
